I wish I could be there! But I'm sort of pleased that I can't as Central Heights is still playing football!!

It probably will be an educational experience as we are pitted against Silver Lake!!!

Good Luck to all the Kansas boys!

Heights standout wrestler returns for collegiate dual
By Rick Peterson
The Capital-Journal
Published Friday, November 09, 2007

Stanford senior 125-pound wrestler Tanner Gardner is a three-time qualifier for the NCAA tournament and a two-time All-American.

One of the most successful student-athletes in Shawnee Heights history, Gardner already has earned a bachelor's degree in public policy from Stanford and is working on a master's degree in sociology while finishing his college eligibility.

David Gonzales / Submitted
Former Shawnee Heights standout wrestler and two-time collegiate All-American Tanner Gardner, in red, leads his Stanford Cardinals tonight at Heights against Fort Hays State and former teammates Tyler Gonzales, Blake Malloy and Phil Hart.

Gardner was a first-team Academic All-American last season, received Stanford's Bill Walsh male athlete of the year award and has accepted a job as a management consultant in Dallas when he's done at Stanford.

Tonight, Gardner will be back where his success story started when he and his Stanford teammates face Fort Hays State in a 7 p.m. college dual at Heights.

"I'm really excited,'' Gardner said. "It's going to be great to wrestle in the Heights gym one more time.''

Gardner lobbied Stanford coach Kerry McCoy to schedule tonight's match, which will re-unite him with former Heights state champs Tyler Gonzales, Blake Malloy and Phil Hart, who all now wrestle for Fort Hays State. Hart is sidelined with an injury, but Gonzales and Malloy will be in Fort Hays' lineup.

Gardner, seventh in last year's NCAA meet, was a star, both in the classroom and on the wrestling mat, long before he signed with Stanford, winning two Class 5A state championships for former Heights coach Bob Gonzales.

But Gardner said that Stanford, located in Palo Alto, Calif., has been just the place to help him further himself in all areas.

"It's been an unbelievable experience out here,'' Gardner said in a phone interview, "and if I had to go back and make my choice I'd definitely make this choice again.

"It really has lived up to its billing and been everything I've expected and more, just great people, great academics, great wrestling, great coaches. Just the whole community they've built out here has been a real blessing.''

McCoy, a two-time Olympian, said that Gardner also has lived up to his part of the deal.

"I didn't recruit him,'' McCoy said. "He was on the team when I got here, but I had a pretty good idea who he was. I knew he was a tough guy, and when I got here, he was one of the first to buy into the system that I brought.

"It's just great to have a guy that is so committed, so dedicated and is sort of the stereotypical Stanford student.''

About the only thing still missing from Gardner's impressive resume is an NCAA title. McCoy said he thinks his standout can take care of that omission this season.

"Tanner's doing a great job, one of the hardest working guys I've ever been associated with,'' McCoy said. "It's really great, because it's going to pay off. Our expectation for him is to challenge for a national title this year.

"It's not a situation where, 'Oh, let's see what happens.' Our plans are for him to be an NCAA champ and do everything to make that happen.''

Like his coach, Gardner said he thinks his best is yet to come.

"Last year overall was a great year, but the ending was pretty disappointing,'' he said. "I didn't perform as well at the NCAA tournament as I would have liked to, for whatever reason. But it's been good motivation for this year.

"I'm just focusing on getting better every day and I think if I do that, that's going to allow me to achieve the goal that I want, which is a national title.''

Fort Hays State wrestler, Heights grad pulls upset win

Three graduates return to old stomping grounds for wrestling dual
By Rick Peterson
The Capital-Journal
Published Saturday, November 10, 2007

Blake Malloy figured his days wrestling in Shawnee Heights' gym were behind him after he graduated in 2005.

Ann Williamson / The Capital-Journal
Fort Hays State wrestler and Shawnee Heights graduate Blake Malloy, top, beat Stanford's Alex Muller 5-2 Friday at a wrestling dual at Heights. Stanford won the dual 26-9.

Friday's college dual gave the former T-Bird state champ a chance for an encore and Malloy, now a junior captain for Fort Hays State, made the most of it, posting a 5-2 decision against Stanford's Alex Muller in the 174-pound match.

Malloy was one of just three winners for Division II Hays in the 10-match dual, with Division I Stanford posting a 26-9 win in front of a crowd of about 1,800 fans at Heights.

"I thought my last dual here was my last dual," Malloy said, "and then coach (Cody Bickley) told me at the beginning of the year that we were going to come back and I was like, 'No way.'

"I was really excited for this.''

Malloy was even more pumped up about getting a chance go against a Division I opponent.

"They have a target on their back basically for us,'' he said. "We have nothing to lose and could just go out there and try to beat them up.''

Malloy jumped out in front 2-0 and also led 3-1 and 5-1 as he controlled most of the match.

In the third period, the hometown crowd shouted, "Blake, Blake," and the seconds ticked down.

"At end I could hear them and it was pretty cool,'' Malloy said.

Malloy was one of three former Heights state champs to wrestle Friday, along with Stanford two-time All-American 125-pound senior Tanner Gardner and Fort Hays 197-pound sophomore Tyler Gonzales.

Gardner, a two-time state champ for Heights, was the first Stanford wrestler to take the mat and opened up a 10-1 lead against Hays' Kyle Patton before pinning Patton in the third period.

"During the day I was a little nervous,'' Gardner said. "There was a lot of hype around the event and people were calling me and asking me this and asking me that, but my coach (Kerry McCoy) said to me this morning when were working out, 'Hey, you're not the event promoter, You're here to wrestle tonight.'

"Once he told me that I turned my cell phone off and just kind of focused on the event.''

Gonzales, ranked fourth in Division II, dropped a 5-1 decision to Stanford's Jake Johnson, but said it was still a thrill to be back home at Heights.

"It's pretty exciting to come back to the old high school and wrestle,'' he said. "You don't get that opportunity too often to come back home and compete in front of your friends. It's a rare opportunity.

"There's been some college programs dying off, but all we can really do is keep promoting the sport and I think things like this really help promote it.''

There was good attendance at the event last night. Many high school coaches in attendance included, Coaches Atlee (Wichita South), Charbonneau (Clay Center), Church (Wichita Heights), Fisher (Goddard), Nigg (Wichita Northwest), Pritchard (Wichita Northwest), Taylor (Wichita Independent), Curtis Simon (Formerly of Emporia), Regan Ericson (Santa Fe Trail), Gonzales (Manhattan) Parks (Shawnee Heights) and Charlie Knox. Sorry for those who I did not see and/or mention.

Baldwin High School wrestling coach Kit Harris was the official.

Many are unaware Kit is a qualified NCAA official. As all who know Kit expect, Kit did an outstanding job.

Danny Grater displayed outstanding sportsmanship when, immediately at conclusion of his match, which he uncharacteristically lost, rushed to the mat official and shook hands.

More thoughts to come!

Richard:

I thought it was a great event too. I was impressed with the attendance. I did not expect the attendance to be that good. I want to commend you and Mike Juby for your promotion of the event on the forum and the home page. I am sure it helped the attendance quite a bit. I know Gary Ulmer in Kansas City also promoted it this week with some of the Kansas City wrestling community and I saw quite a few of them in attendance. I am sure there were others who promoted it in other Kansas communities too. I know a lot of adults and kids decided to attend instead of high school football playoff games. Good job to all of you who promoted this event. Good job also to all who organized and ran the dual. This was a very good way for the high school kids in attendance to start their wrestling seasons.
