Grant's Squad Opens Season with Wrestle-Offs Friday

Huskies return two NCAA Qualifiers, both of whom are ranked in their respective classes.
Nov. 1, 2007

DeKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois wrestling team opens its season Friday at 7 p.m. with the annual intrasquad wrestle-offs.

Huskie grapplers will compete head-to-head to earn a spot in the starting line-up for Northern Illinois' regular season opener against No. 3 Iowa State.

NIU head coach Dave Grant said he's anxiously awaiting the start of the year.

"The intensity and physical nature exhibited on the mat is unmatched," he said. "In my mind, there's no better sport."

According to Grant, much of the team's in-house competition has been between freshman and more seasoned wrestlers.

"We're a combination of a young guys and old guys." he said. "It always seems like it's a freshman and a senior going at it."

Grant is excited for the public's opportunity to see some of his underclassmen compete.

"We have some really talented freshman, which is a good thing," Grant said. "TJ Wunnicke, Tristen DeShazer and Nick McLemore all have good credentials and could fill major spots for us."

Whoever earns a starting role for Northern Illinois will be immediately tested. The Huskies face the third-ranked Cyclones in a dual meet Nov. 8, and again two days later at the Cyclone Open. Two weeks after that, the Huskies battle unanimous No. 1 Minnesota at the Rochester Duals. To wrap-up the month, Northern Illinois hosts sixth-ranked Northwestern in the annual Showcase Meet in DeKalb, Nov. 30.

Huskies Control Buffalo for 25-12 Win

NIU wins six of first seven matches to pick up MAC victory

Jan. 12, 2008

Redshirt freshman Tristen DeShazer was one of five freshman to compete in NIU's MAC win over Buffalo.

DeKALB, Ill. - The Northern Illinois wrestling team opened Mid-American Conference competition with an impressive 25-12 win over Buffalo, Saturday.

The Huskies (5-3, 1-0 MAC) won six of the first seven matches to build a 25-3 lead, which they held for the win. Northern Illinois also defeated Findlay, the No. 14 divison-II team in the nation, 32-6.

"It was a good night for us," NIU head coach Dave Grant said. "Obviously, the MAC competition is something we always stress."

Senior Pat Castillo (Western Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) dominated his match against Buffalo's Joe Wilson, opening up an 8-2 lead in the first period before pinning Wilson at the 2:49 mark. Castillo, the 12th-ranked wrestler in the nation at 133 pounds, upped his record to 14-5 with that win, plus a technical fall against Findlay's Jan Ulinski.

True freshman Bryan O'Connor (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) also impressed, earning a 14-4 major decision over 2007 MAC placefinisher John Cummings. The match was O'Connor's first dual meet competition as a collegian. He had gone 4-4 in open tournament matches prior to the win.

A pair of Huskie wrestlers fought from behind to reverse the momentum of their opponents and take victory. Redshirt freshman Tristen DeShazer (Wichita, Kan./Wichita West) went deep into the third period trailing 1-0 to Andrew Stella. In the last 30 seconds of the match, DeShazer scored on a reversal and a near fall to ensnare a 5-1 win.

"It showed a lot of guts on his part to be able to come back and turn that match around," Grant said.

Junior Jesse Linczmaier also found himself down, trailing 4-0 in the second period before cradling Buffalo's Scott Rendos for the fall.

Overall, Grant was most impressed with the way his young athletes performed. For the Huskies, three true freshmen and two redshirt freshmen wrestled in the win over Buffalo.

"What's really lit a lot of spark in our program is a lot of the younger kids in our line-up," he said. "We're making some mistakes, but those guys are bringing a lot of intensity and a lot of enthusiasm to our program."

Grant complimented the ability of the team's freshman to quickly adapt to the division-I level.

"They were wrestling in high school at this time last year. It's a whole different style, and they're making a great adjustment to the college style of wrestling."

In Northern Illinois' match-up with Findlay, the Huskies won eight of 10 matches on their way to their fifth win of the season.

The Huskies continue MAC action on the road when they face Ohio in Athens, Jan. 18 at 6 p.m. (CST).

Ohio Falls to NIU, 26-10

Jan. 18, 2008

ATHENS, Ohio - The Ohio men's wrestling team lost to Northern Illinois, 26-10, in the Bobcats' second MAC dual of the season.

Ohio fell to 5-10, 0-2 in the MAC, in dual competitions this season while the Huskies continued their hot-streak, winning their sixth straight dual of the season improving their overall dual record to 6-1, 2-0 in the MAC.

After Northern Illinois won the toss, the Huskies chose to begin the bout at heavyweight where NIU's Dave Brenner defeated Jason Marshall 3-1 to give the Huskies an early 3-0 lead. At 125 pounds, NIU's TJ Wunnicke pinned Heath Allen to further the Huskies' lead to 9-0.

Northern Illinois showed no signs of letting up, with No. 11 ranked Pat Castillo defeating Ohio's Quentin Keyes 22-9 at 133 pounds, putting the NIU lead at 13-0.

But the Bobcats would answer with their first win of the night. Germane Lindsey improved his individual record to 14-9 by earning a 9-7 decision against the Huskies' Tristen DeShazer. NIU's Kalen Kull gave the Huskies another three points with a 5-4 decision against Kevin Christensen but Lindsey's win gave the Bobcats points and the lead sat at 16-3 after the 149 pound bout.

Clay Tucker secured Ohio's second victory of the Friday night fight, taking a 6-4 decision against NIU's Bryan O'Connor in the 157 pound weight class. Tucker has now won two straight bouts at 157, combining his win on Friday night with his victory against Duquesne's Dan Pauley at the Virginia Duals.

Kent Smith shot out to an early 4-1 lead against NIU's Jesse Lincsmaier but Smith eventually fell at 165 pounds, losing a very close 6-5 decision.

NIU's second nationally ranked wrestler, No. 13 Duke Burk defeated Ohio's Jacob Ison at 174 pounds, 11-3, but the Bobcats had one last win in them.

Freshman Erik Schuth, who has now won three straight bouts at 184, earned a major decision by defeating Brad Diekhaus 14-4 to give the Bobcats four team points and put the score at 23-10.

Chris Iammarino followed Schuth at 197 pounds, the final match of the day, but again lost a close decision, 3-1, to NIU's Jake Smith.

A total of six matches were decided by two points of less as the Bobcats competed at home in front of a loud Bobcat crowd for the first time in more than one month.

Ohio will be back at the Convocation Center with a Sunday afternoon showdown against ACC conference member, NC State. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.

Big Guns, Big Points

Chine, Blackwell and Porter combine for 44 points as Flashes mush Huskies

By Ty Linder – Kent State Athletic Communications

DeKalb, Ill. – Kent’s State’s big guns caught fire on a frigid Illinois night.

Trailing Northern Illinois 7-3 after three matches at the Convocation Center, Kent State’s upper weight trio of Eric Chine, Michael Blackwell and Jermail Porter toasted the scoreboard for a total of 44 points in the next three matches to give the 24th-ranked Golden Flashes a 14-7 lead – one they would never relinquish in a spirited 20-16 conference win over the Huskies.

“They all tried real hard in certain situations. We’ve been trying very hard to get them into situations where they can score points and capitalize on different match situations,” head coach Jim Andrassy said.

Wrestling without returning national qualifier Dan Mitcheff and fourth-ranked (MAC) Clint Sponseller on the trip, the Flashes sent Nick Dierkes out to start things at 157. He would surrender a 4-2 decision to put the good guys behind out of the chute.

It didn’t look forgiving for Kent State at 165 pounds either. Despite taking the first shot, Kurt Gross was eventually turned over on the same move by the Huskies’ Jesse Linczmaier. Down 5-0 out of the gate, Gross would respond by closing the match on a 16-6 scoring run which included six takedowns. It tied things up between the two teams, 3-3.

After Duke Burk’s major decision of Chris Estep at 174, the Flashes’ big guns started the scoring party.

A dominating third period by Eric Chine against Brad Dieckhaus gave him the necessary points to stretch out a precarious lead. Chine’s seven-point third stanza turned the final score to 14-4, tying the dual at 7-7. The very next match saw a major offensive explosion as Michael Blackwell followed suit by putting 20 points on the Convocation Center scoreboard against Jake Smith. The back-to-back majors but Kent ahead, 11-7.

At 285, Jermail Porter became the third straight Flashes grappler to eclipse double figures. Porter notched a 10-4 win over NIU’s Dave Benner. The three solid, uncontested wins gave the Flashes the big 14-7 lead as the dual turned over to the top of the order.

Ranked second in the MAC, Nic Bedelyon found himself in a defensive struggle with fellow freshman TJ Wunnecke. Wunnicke tried his hardest to slow down Bedelyon’s attack, but a takedown and advantage time point in the opening period proved to be the difference as the KSU rookie prevailed, 4-3.

“I thought (Bedelyon’s) riding time point was probably the difference in the dual meet,” NIU head coach Dave Grant said.

“We came in here without two of our starters, two ranked starters,” Andrassy said. “That would be like a football team going to battle without a cornerback and linebacker out. I was very proud with how our kids wrestled as a team.”

Kent State then yielded a six-point forfeit to the Huskies at 133 in lieu of the ailing Mitcheff.

Ahead 17-13, a win of any kind by 18th-ranked (NCAA) Drew Lashaway would clinch a key road win for Kent State. And the junior would not disappoint as he secured a commanding 8-3 win over Tristen DeShazer at 141 pounds. It gave the Flashes a 20-13 lead, and the final of 20-16 would be realized when Kalen Knull knocked off Jeremy Depoy 7-4 at 149.

The Flashes will return to action – and hopefully get healthy in the meanwhile – on Thu. Jan. 31 when they travel to Pittsburgh for a 7 p.m. tilt with the Panthers.

“It’s a great challenge for us. Our goal is to get healthy and I think we match up with them really well. We need to keep working hard,” Andrassy added.

From the Northern Iowa website:

The Panthers dented the scoreboard twice with pair of wins from the Ettelson brothers of Hudson, Iowa. C.J. scored a major decision at 141 pounds with a 15-7 victory over Tristen DeShazer.

C.J. trailed early in his match with DeShazer but used two tilts, a takedown and a reversal to take a commanding 14-3 lead late in the match. DeShazer countered with a four-point move in the final 15 seconds of the match, but Ettelson hung on for the eight-point major decision.
