Rosenhamer, Carroll roll to home tourney victories

Rosenhamer, Carroll roll to home tourney victories
BY JON MCGILLIVRAY
Wichita Eagle correspondent

A deep and talented Bishop Carroll wrestling program has many familiar names.

Tyler Rosenhamer isn't one of them -- for now.

The 160-pound senior was injured as a freshman, then had season-ending injuries as a sophomore and junior.

Now healthy, Rosenhamer won the most exciting match of the Carroll Invitational on Saturday night, defeating Andale's Sam Thoman 6-4 in overtime for the championship at 160.

Rosenhamer was one of 10 Carroll wrestlers to advance to the finals -- all posting victories -- as the Eagles scored 254 ½ points to easily outdistance second-place Heights, which finished with 116 ½. Newton was third.

"I'm just trying to get better as the year goes on, trying to peak by state time," he said.

Success for Rosenhamer (10-1) this season began when he beat teammate Tanner Cody in preseason wrestle-offs. Cody was the state runnerup at 160 pounds last season.

Rosenhamer has since beaten the top-ranked wrestler in Class 4A -- Thoman was ranked second in4A -- and lost by two points last weekend to the top-ranked wrestler in Oklahoma.

"Realistically, I think I have a good chance to win state," Rosenhamer said.

Carroll coach Darian Eshelman was happy with all 10 of his champions.

"I am so happy with the way the kids wrestled," Eshelman said. "We had 10 guys in the finals and they all won. I don't really know what else to say.

"They work so hard in the wrestling room and care so much in competitions and fight so hard, I'm really proud of their efforts."

In addition to Rosenhamer's championship, Dylan Penka (103), Jordan Keller (119), John Keller (125), Jake Mainz (130), Mitch Arnold (145), Kyle Detmer (152), Timmy Chadd (171), Jake Cole (215) and Tony Marquez (285) all won titles for the Eagles.

Other individual champions included three wrestlers from Heights -- Daniel DeShazer (112), Kendric Maple (135) and Chase Nelson (140) --and Newton's Nathaniel Martens (189).
