Goddard gets well, wins regional BY JEFFREY LUTZ The Wichita Eagle MAIZE - Goddard's wrestling team didn't have the look of one that had been depleted by injuries and illness during the week.
Though several wrestlers missed practices with various ailments, compassion from opponents was probably minimal after Goddard dominated a Class 6A wrestling regional on Saturday.
The Lions won six weight classes and qualified 11 wrestlers for next weekend's state tournament. They scored 191 ½ points to easily beat second-place Garden City for the team title.
"This last week has probably been the most stressful week I've ever coached," Goddard coach Brett Means said. "We had seven, eight guys out with injuries, missing practices. It didn't go exactly as I hoped today, but we qualified 11. I'd like to have 12 or 13, but we'll go with what we've got."
Most of Goddard's wrestlers appeared healthy, though 152-pounder Brent Fisher was forced to forfeit his championship match against Northwest's Justin Ringgold due to injury.
Two-time state champions Tyler Caldwell and Boaz Beard won for Goddard, as did Mitchell Means and Brandon Bonewell.
Though the biggest test comes next week, the Lions said they wanted to perform well at regionals because it determines seeding for the state meet. Bonewell and Beard scored pinfall victories, while Means and Caldwell had relatively easy decisions.
"We've been training hard all year and we're looking to wrestle our best at the right time," Caldwell said. "We've had a lot of tough meets all year, so we're trying to pick our intensity up and be prepared so we can go through to state and finish it out."
The Lions' 11 qualifiers were two more than Dodge City, which had six fourth-place finishes.
The match of the day saw Maize's Tim Dunham beat Jaime Quintanar of Garden City 3-2 in double overtime at 130 pounds. Dunham scored in the match's final second, preceding a referee's whistle.
Quintanar took down Dunham just as the whistle sounded and the referee initially awarded him two points, which likely would have given him the win. But after a conference, the officials determined the takedown had occurred after the whistle.
"If I had to do it over again, I'd wrestle the match over," Dunham said. "I'm kind of unhappy with the way the match finished. I wish it would have finished in a less controversial way. I like the excitement about it, but there's going to be a lot of debate about it."
Northwest's three wins were second most. Ringgold's forfeit victory preceded Grizzlies wins in the two highest weight-classes. Heavyweight Brock Heithaus made quick work of Garden City's Cody Wilson, pinning him after 22 seconds to improve to 32-4.
Sophomore Kyle Caylor, a 215-pounder, battled to beat Josh Hicks of Goddard. The match was tied 2-2 late in the second period, but Caylor scored the final seven points of the match to win 9-2.
"Caylor gets everybody's best match because everybody wants to beat him," Northwest coach Eric Prichard said. "I just told him to keep wrestling. Keep your head and keep wrestling."
