Carroll advances 11to state tournament BY JOANNA CHADWICK The Wichita Eagle
VALLEY CENTER - When Bishop Carroll senior Kyle Detmer walked off the mat following his regional wrestling championship victory at 152 pounds on Saturday, someone called out, "Hey, Detmer, do you even sweat?"
It's a fair question for a guy who has pins in all 31 matches this season.
Detmer was one of seven Carroll champions at the Class 5A regional. The Eagles advanced 11 wrestlers to the two-day 5A tournament, which begins Friday in Hutchinson.
Detmer had a little drama -- for him. After taking down Winfield's Pete Tapia with one minute remaining in the first period and getting him on his back, Detmer nearly lost control.
"... I was kind of getting worried that I wouldn't get (the pin), then, I saw it was about 30 seconds left, so I squeezed and took control," Detmer said. "He almost got away, but I held on."
The Valley Center regional was the toughest in 5A, with six of the 10 ranked 5A teams there. So Carroll advancing 11 to state is a good sign.
"I am so pleased with how our final rounds went," Carroll coach Darian Eshelman said. "It sets us up good at state (seeding-wise) and helps us out in the first couple rounds."
Carroll senior Jordan Keller added: "We were happy (with 11), but we should have had a little more. We had a couple come up short, lost a couple tough matches in the money rounds. For the toughness of the regional, we did what we needed to do."
Valley Center also advanced 11 wrestlers, while Arkansas City had seven, Kapaun Mount Carmel six. Winfield had four wrestlers advance. Kapaun's Joe Hagan pinned Emporia's Tavo Dikin to win at 135.
Valley Center didn't have a champion but had five second-place finishes, four thirds and two fourths, which secured second place in the team scores.
"We might not have a champion, but everybody here is good," Valley Center coach Brian Shelton said. "I wouldn't be surprised to see eight or nine champions next week from this regional. For me, we did as good a job as we could possibly do at every weight."
Carroll dominated the majority of its championship matches, winning all seven. The Eagles also had three third-place finishes and one fourth.
Freshman Dylan Penka sparked the Eagles by pinning Kapaun's Tyler Dryden with 5.6 seconds remaining in the 103-pound final.
Jordan and John Keller (32-0) and Jake Cole (26-7) got major decisions at 119, 125 and 215. Mitch Arnold (32-2) pinned Valley Center's Jimmy Stults with 1:04 to go in the third period of the 145-pound match. Tyler Rosenhamer (31-3) had Carroll's closest match, even though he nearly pinned Pittsburg's Jordan Brown in the second period at 160. He got a 5-1 win.
Jordan Keller improved to 31-0 with a win over Valley Center's Chase Nitcher, the sophomore's second loss.
Keller took Nitcher down just 22 seconds into the match and then nearly pinned him with less than a second to go in the first period.
"My goal is to go undefeated and dominate in all my matches," he said. "I only have one regular decision all year. I wrestled the way I wanted to -- dominating."
Kapaun's Hagan, at 135 pounds, had struggled with the flu during the Crusaders' past few tournaments.
But during Saturday's regional, he wrestled better than he has, pinning Dikin with 10.3 seconds remaining in the first period.
"It's pretty sweet," he said of the pin, "but I just wanted to speed the thing up. Kapaun has a dance tonight that I want to go to, so I was just trying to speed up the process."
Winfield's Chad Harding defeated Valley Center's Jake Breitigan 7-5 at 140 pounds.

PHS sends 7 to state By Matthew Clark | THE MORNING SUN
VALLEY CENTER — The Pittsburg Purple Dragons will be sending seven to the Class 5A state wrestling tournament.
That constitutes the best showing the Dragons have had at a regional tournament since Scott Rieck has been head coach.
But that does not mean that he is pleased with how the Dragons performed on Saturday in Valley Center.
"We laid an egg in the medal matches," Rieck said. "We had seven in the medal matches and won just one and that was disappointing to say the least."
In fact, the Dragons did not score a victory in any of their championship matches. Only Cougar VonFeldt, at 215 pounds, won a final match as he defeated Emporia's Ryan Bass in the consolation finals by fall at 3:31.
"He was the lone medal match winner and he converted," Rieck said. "I was very pleased with his performance all day long."
Defending state champ Tyler Koehn reached the finals at 171 with a technical fall over Levi Hopper of Valley Center in the first round and a 16-0 major decision over Timmy Chadd of Bishop Carroll.
However, in the championships, Scott Elliott of Arkansas City pinned Koehn at the 5:55 mark.
Jake Zahm made it to the finals at 130 pounds and fell to Tristan Graham of Arkansas City, 9-3.
Jordan Brown, the top seed at 160 pounds, drew a bye in the first round and defeated Cameron Riojas of Arkansas City in the semifinals 8-3, but Tyler Rosenhammer of Bishop Carroll knocked off Brown in the championship, 5-1.
"The level of competition all day long was very intense so I did not fault the younger guys for their performance," Rieck said. "The older guys let themselves down with their lack of execution.
"I told them at the beginning of the day that they would run into guys that were mountains and that we would have to rivers to move those mountains and we were just babbling brooks."
At 112 pounds, Mario Corado won his first round match against Keaton Dugan of Bishop Carroll by maj. dec. 11-2 but lost to Garrett Jones of Arkansas City in the second round.
Corado battled his way back through the consolation bracket into the finals where he was defeated by Kapaun Mt. Carmel senior Steven Santiago by tech. fall at the 5:00 mark.
Austin Haake will also make a trip to the state tournament after his fourth-place finish at 103 pounds.
The Dragons' final state qualifier is Daniel Blair at 145 pounds. Blair, like Haake and Corado, battled through the consolation bracket to finish fourth.
"We should be excited to get seven in but it is hard to be excited because of our performance down the stretch," Rieck said.
That means that this week has the potential to be a hard week for those that are traveling to Wichita for the Class 5A state tournament which begins on Friday at the Kansas Colesium. For Blair, Haake, VonFeldt and Corado, this will be their first trip to the state tournament.
"We will have to figure out what it will take for those guys to execute and wrestle tough when they have to against a tough guy," Rieck said.
