Andale qualifies eight for 4A meet BY JON MCGILLIVRAY Wichita Eagle correspondent
CLEARWATER - The Andale wrestling team competed in several tournaments this season with many of the state's largest and strongest teams.
That competition paid off for the Indians during Saturday's regional action -- Andale qualified eight wrestlers for next weekend's Class 4A tournament in Salina.
Andale finished with four regional champions -- Colton Eck at 112 pounds, Trent Cox (125), Benny Armstrong (145) and Sam Thoman (160) --while four other Indians placed in the top four, earning spots in the state tournament.
Darin Stroot placed second, Scott Lester and B.J. Finney were third while Ben Thoman finished fourth.
Colby won the tournament with 213 points while Andale was second at 177.5. Goodland (142), Pratt (137.5) and Mulvane (79) also finished in the top five.
Wellington senior Kody Page defeated Colby's Nick Kriss to win the 215-pound title as the Crusaders and Mulvane each qualified three wrestlers, while Clearwater advanced two to state.
Eck, a freshman, entered the tournament with a 20-11 record, in part because of the Indians' tough schedule.
"He's come around and done real well," Andale co-coach Terry Cox said.
"Our competition level, and the tournaments we go to, we have some pretty tough ones. And it just backed up that he's a pretty solid kid and he's been in some of those positions before."
Saturday's championship final between Page and Kriss was the fifth meeting between the two, with Page emerging victorious and advancing to the state tournament for a second time.
"I've lost to him by one each time, this time I finally beat him, by two," Page said.
Much like Andale, Wellington has participated in strong tournaments, and Page said it's been rough on his record but good experience.
"We've been to a lot of bigger tournaments, a lot of 5A and 6A guys," he said. "I've only lost to two 4A guys and (Kriss) was one of them."
