Intermat (Intermatwrestle.com) has some nice coverage going on. I think the finals are broadcast tonight. Bunch will be facing Mike Zadick in the finals. Joe Johnston lost to Mike Zadick after beating Teyon Ware in the opening round. He then lost on the backside to Robertson (who lost to Kolat first round). That bracket is loaded.
Good stuff...with video feed later.

Ike,
I think that Joe Johnston lost to Bill Zadick, Mike's brother. I agree that the bracket is loaded, particularly with Roberson and Ware bumping up from 60 kg after learning that the U.S. won't be able to compete at that weight in the Olympics.
So far 60 kg is going exactly as I expected. Hopefully that trend will continue and Shawn Bunch will secure the victories over Zadick and take the top spot on Team USA!

Mike,
Your right...worth mentioning that Bill is a World Champ this last year too. I didn't realize that is why Ware and Roberson were in that bracket. Pretty much every guy in that bracket is a stud...not just really good, studs. What fun that would have been to watch all those matches.
Finals.... Bunch lost the first match. Both of the Zadick brothers came through in the first match. Schwab, Vering, Cejudo all won the first one too. Don't remember the rest...
It will be interesting to see how many guys end up qualifying that are at the USOTC. I know Bill Zadick attributed that to his success at the worlds.

After losing the first match against Mike Zadick, Shawn came back in the second match with a solid victory. Bunch won the first period conclusively, then wrestled the second period very conservatively to a 0-0 tie. He was fortunate to win the flip and scored 3 points very quickly for the win.
60 kg now comes down to a final match between Zadick & Bunch. Also, there is an outside chance that the U.S. could earn a wild-card spot at the Olympics in this weight, so there is a lot riding on this final match!

Yeah, Ike, that was a tough one.
Bunch was handling Zadick easily in the first period, scoring two takedowns and never in jeopardy. In the second period, Shawn seemed to be trying the same strategy of taking the cautious approach that he took in the second match, but it backfired as he got caught in a throw and lost the period 0-3. In the third period, Shawn got in on a great shot but Zadick managed to hold him off. With only 20 seconds to go, Zadick caught Bunch in low level shot, gaining the takedown and winning the period 1-0 and claiming the title at 60 kg.

Richard,
Thanks for reminding us about the other Kansas wrestlers who were competing yesterday. Although Ike included them in his initial post, it's a great accomplishment for any wrestler to make it to the Olympic Trials and these men deserve all of the recognition we can provide.
It's really unfortunate that Zach Roberson was put in the position of having to either compete in his regular weight class and have virtually no chance of going to the Olympics (since the U.S. did not qualify at that weight) or moving up a weight class and wrestling at a weight disadvantage against the best in the country. I believe that Zach is nearly ready to retire from competition and viewed this as his last chance; thus leading him to accept the disadvantages of moving up in weight. My heart goes out to him over the difficult situation he was put into through no fault of his own. If Zach is truly done competing (and that is just my guess, not an announced fact), then I would like to thank him for the many years of enjoyment and pride that he gave me in watching another Kansas product show the nation and the world what our state can produce.
Shawn Bunch and Joe Johnston are still relatively young and I hope and expect to see great things from them in the future. Eric Luedke will be the last Kansas wrestler to compete in the Trials and I know that lots of wrestling fans in our state will be pulling for him. Good Luch, Eric!

Mike,
There is an article in the Kansas City Star today about Zach Roberson that quotes him about his future plans. He states that he is probably going to retire both from competition and coaching. He is looking to start a career utilizing his undergraduate degree in industrial engineering and his master's degree in business.
Congratulations to him on an incredible wrestling career and the best of luck to him in his future occupation.
