NWCA announces 2007-08 Bob Bubb Coaching Excellence Awards

National Wrestling Coaches Association

The National Wrestling Coaches Association is pleased to announce the recipients of the Bob Bubb Coaching Excellence Awards for the 2007-08 season.

The award is presented annually to one coach across each division of collegiate wrestling and it’s intended for an outstanding coach who epitomizes the qualities and characteristics of a role model and mentor for developing young student-athletes.

“Since the inception of the Bob Bubb Coaching Excellence Award, we’ve been able to recognize and honor those coaches who go above and beyond when it comes to more than just coaching,” said NWCA Executive Director Mike Moyer. “Not only is this award in appreciation for a fine job in coaching wrestlers, but a fine job in teaching individuals.”

Winning the award in Division I is American University head coach Mark Cody. Since taking the helm in Washington, D.C., Cody has produced the school’s first wrestling All-Americans and the school’s first national championship – overall or individually – in 2007 when Josh Glenn won the NCAA title at 197 pounds.

“Mark Cody has the ability not only to polish a rough-around-the-edges athlete into a winner, but he’s steadfast in his standards,” said NWCA President Ron Mirikitani. “He will not compromise the values of his team just for a few extra wins.”

Cody’s first All-American was Dan Waters in 2005, followed by Muzaffar Abdurakhmanov and Glenn in 2006. Glenn won the title in 2007 and ended his career as a three-time All-American in 2008. Mike Cannon joined the growing list of AU All-Americans this past season.

David Schutter of Truman State takes the honor in Division II. Schutter coached 165-pounder Blake Peterson to All-American honors, but also coached his team to its second straight finish atop the NWCA All-Academic Team standings.

The NCAA’s motto for Division II is “I chose Division II,” and at Truman State, Schutter’s wrestlers chose wisely.

“It’s kind of hard to argue there’s been a better coach pushing academics at the Division II level than Coach Schutter,” said Moyer. “Four number one finishes academically and two in a row pretty much speaks for itself.”

Williams College co-head coaches Dan DiCenzo and Rafael are honored for their collective work in Division III.

DiCenzo just completed his fourth year at Williams, where he shares the head coaching duties with Vega.

At Williams, the duo has had a hand in coaching a pair of Division III three-time All-American – Jon Dolan and Tom Prairie.

“Much like David Schutter at Truman State, what Dan DiCenzo and Rafael Vega stress is what happens in the classroom,” said Mirikitani. “It’s no secret great academics are rewarded in life and all three of our NCAA award winners guided teams to the top spot in the All-Academic Rankings.”

Williams College edged Olivet for the top spot in Division III’s All-Academic team standings.

University of Great Falls head coach Caleb Schaffer had quite the rookie season. The NAIA award recipient guided the Argos to a 14-4 dual record and a fourth-place finish at the NAIA National Championships.

“While Coach Schaffer was only in his first year as a head coach, he’s led by example,” said Moyer. “An All-American and National Champion as a wrestler, he was also a two-time All-Academic selection. His influence is apparent.”

Joe Renfro of Labette Community College and Joe Dansby of Cuesta won the awards for the Junior College and California Community College divisions.

Labette finished third at the NCJAA National Championships and had seven All-Americans highlighted by Mikey Morgan’s individual championship at 165 pounds.

Cuesta wasn’t a challenger for the California title, but Dansby’s seven-year run at the college has been successful off the mat.

“Joe Dansby’s the kind of guy you want your kids to be coached by,” said Mirikitani. “The emphasis is on the student.”

“We’re pleased to have such a diverse group of winners this year,” said Moyer. “From coaches with international experience to those in their first year, it shows we can find our next generation of mentors anywhere within this sport.”
