I know he wrestled for Missouri, but I am surprised there hasn't been much discussion of Askren's Olympic matches on this forum. I have never seen him so mentally crushed (maybe because he hasn't lost a big match lately) but I hope he bounces back tougher than ever and continues in freestyle.

Should have never cut his locks???????????????
I think we are all shocked at the performances of the USA
but man........ Henry sure did it up !!!!!!
I knew he would be good but I thought it would be in Greco
One year at Fargo he did not have a point scored on him in Greco and only 2 or 3 in freestyle.
but he stayed in such awesome position when he wrestled greco I was just amazed and in Awe, back then. Those of you who remember he wore cornrolls for Greco and bushed his hair out for freestyle. He gave a show back then and delivered another one in front of the world and gave us a showing to be proud to be an American.
All said the Olympics just might be a pretty tough tournamnent, maybe we are spoiled by some of the great athletes/wrestlers we have had from America in the last few Olympics.

As a Mizzou alumni I was really hoping that Ben would do well. Perhaps he just didn't have the right mindset. But he is young, and he will have another opportunity in London should he choose to participate in those games.

Coach Peterman Coach, coming from you I find this comment almost biblical.

I think that our team over all is young....not just age but in terms of compititon on the international stage. We wrestle folk for a majority of our lives then are thrown to freestyle and greco and expected to compete. I also think that the bar has to be raised the next 4 years. I think that we have the talent and the resources, but we need the expectations. Our team is able to compete with the rest of the world, but we need to expect it and strive for it. If they just want to make it to the Olympics...well good, but if they want to compete....that takes a different and sometimes selfish dedication. Look at the great ones...Smith, Gable, Schultz....they all had something that seperated them from the rest...that "it"...the unthinkable amount of dedication and outlook on the sport that made them different. It seems that Russia has taken that way of thinking as a team and expects to compete and win everytime they step on the mat.
Good work USA and I look forward to 2012.

He didn't ever expect to win gold in Beijing. He made that claim to try to fool himself into thinking he could. He was in the toughest weight class. This year he wrestled the 3rd-string Russian at Vladikavkaz and got absolutely throttled. How would he expect to win gold? I believe he was mentally crushed not b/c he didn't win gold but b/c he didn't get the opportunity to wrestle the absolute GOAT freestyle wrestler, his idol. I just can't believe Russia only got 3 out of 7 freestyle golds. It must not have been USA's deterioration in freestyle wrestling this year but other countries' improvements.
Hats off to Cejudo. Great accomplishment.
