I got a few too many emails and the thread was getting off track. I did end the topic myself it was not taken off by a Moderator as one email suggested.

pancake,

Thanks for the info. It had strayed a bit off subject, but as long as people don't use profane language I feel there can be an educational benefit to such threads. From the looks of it, the definition of novice is an area where several coaches/club directors could use some education.

pancake,

I am disappointed the post was deleted. I took my two youngest children to catechism class this evening, and had intended to post a reply to Coach Gibson when I returned home.

There are certainly numerous participants in our sport, including Coach Gibson, who need to be educated in the purpose of novice tournaments.

Mr. Salyer

Believe it or not, I too was disappointed that this debate was squelched. While I did not agree with the tone of pancake’s original post and subsequent posts before they were edited/deleted, I do believe this issue was an appropriate and necessary issue to debate. I believe that the state governing body or clubs hosting these tournaments need to do a better job defining who is eligible to compete. It is easy to say that honorable clubs will do the right thing. However, the definition of “the right thing” is open for interpretation under the currant guidelines. In years past, the standard statement “First or Second Year Wrestlers, NO STATE QUALIFIERS” appeared in bold print on each novice tournament flyer. This year I have noticed this changed to “First Year Wrestlers” on some and “No District Qualifiers” on others. Each of these statements clearly defines the maximum eligible skill level in very measurable terms.

I do believe there is room for second year wrestlers at these tournaments and I laid out my reasons why in the deleted chain. I also have publicly stated that I am open for a rules change and that I could be wrong on this issue. I would be interested in hearing your thoughts.

I do stand by my “Forum Rules” posting. I hope you realize at this time that I did not intend to "stifle discussion". I just object to people, hiding behind screen names, attacking people or clubs like a pack of hyenas at the first scent of blood. This type of debate will go no where and nothing good will come from it. Once in Salina, I had a 12-year old wrestler take three sharp blows to the head from the heal of his opponents hand without referee intervention (I am not talking about a typical set up). The next opportunity I had, I asked the referee to the score table and told him that we were there to wrestle…not for an ultimate fighting championship fight. I told him to just clarify the rules because if he wished we could compete in that form as well; it was up to him. I got my point across and the rest of the match went fine. The point of my “Forum Rules” post was to get this same point across to the group. If we get down in the mud and attack each other without being accountable for what we say, are we really making a positive impact in kid’s lives?

I have great admiration for the members of this forum. All of them care about our sport. I know first hand the amount of time that each of them is dedicating to the kids of our community. Good Luck.

There are no State rules or State guidelines for novice tournaments.

This is something the clubs do on their own and is not mandated by the State Wrestling Board at all?

We used to not have novice tournaments.

The way I look at it is every tournament is a novice tournament? That is why we have a ranking system?
Put the A-B's together, C-D's together, Novice by themselves unless you don't have enough then put them with the D's.

Novice tournaments are for more clubs to make money, which is good because we needed more tournaments because a few years ago you could'nt hardly get in tournaments because they were full?

Now some kids will just wrestle on Sunday's and that free's up space on Saturday's.

It doesn't matter how you put kids in, people are still going to bitch no matter if it's a novice tournament or a open.
