UNO Opens 2008-09 Season at Daktronics Open

The UNO Maverick wrestling team will get its first taste of competition in the 2008-09 season on Saturday, Nov. 8 at the Daktronics Open in Brookings, S.D. The meet is hosted by South Dakota State University.

Competition is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. with about 200 wrestlers slated to compete in the day-long event. Doors will open at 8 a.m., with admission $8 for adults and $5 for children in grades K-12.

Records & Rankings
The Mavericks are ranked No. 1 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association pre-season poll and eight Mavs are among the top eight in individual rankings.

Senior Ross Taplin, a national runner-up last year, was the preseason pick as the top wrestler in the 174 pound weight class. Junior Cody Garcia, who is a two-time national champion at 125 pounds, is ranked second at 133.

Outlook
Coming off a third place finish at the 2008 NCAA II National Championships last March, the Mavericks return eight All-Americans and two national champions to a lineup seeking their fourth national title in the last six years.

On Deck
The Mavericks will travel to Ames, Iowa to compete in the Nichols Open on Saturday, Nov. 15.

UNO will host the Kaufman-Brand Open on Saturday, Nov. 22 at Lee & Helene Sapp Fieldhouse. The meet, the largest one-day collegiate tournament in the nation, will get underway at 9 a.m. and will feature some of the top wrestlers and teams in the nation among all divisions. Over 600 wrestlers from approximately 40 teams are expected to compete.

Should be lots of good reports coming in soon from this tournament regarding many of our Kansas guys.

Matt Baker went 4-1 in his 1st college tournament in the 184 lb weight class. I hear they stopped the tournament to set up for a volleyball event. Weird!

Mavs Crown Three Champions at Daktronics Open

BROOKINGS, S.D. -- The University of Nebraska at Omaha wrestling team crowned three champions in the season-opening Daktronics Open Saturday at South Dakota State University.

Redshirt freshman Esai Dominguez (149) went 5-0 with four technical falls and an 8-4 decision in the finals over Joe Soto.

At 174 pounds, senior Ross Taplin won the tournament's Most Falls Awards, going 4-0 with four first period pins.

Wrestling unattached, freshman 285-pounder Elijah Madison was 4-0 with a 5-3 decision in the finals over Nebraska's Tucker Lane.

Redshirt freshman Nathan Sigman finished third at 157 pounds with a 4-1 record. Freshnman Matt Baker, wrestling unattached at 184 pounds, collected a 4-1 record, placing fifth..

Jacob Marrs finished in third place at the Harold Nichols Open

AMES, Iowa -- Junior All-American Jacob Marrs finished in third place at 197 pounds with a 5-1 record to pace the top-ranked Maverick wrestlers Saturday at the Harold Nichols Open on the campus of Iowa State University. No team scores were kept in the meet.

Other notable UNO performances included unattached wrestlers Ross Taplin (174) who placed third with a 5-1 record and heavyweight freshman Elijah Madison, who was second, finishing 4-1 in the meet.
