As the thread about the Sabetha tourney has getting a bit burdened, I started this under a new thread! Raven Coach--Good question; Marching Band is not a KSHSAA Activity and therefore not subject to any KSHSAA rules. Concert Band is a sanctioned activity as a result of the KSHSAA music festival series held during the second semester. On a side note ... just trying to get the limitations of my brain around this! How does Marching Band v. Concert Band, compare to a HS Folkstyle team v. a HS Freestyle or Greco team?

As far as the Coaching Limitations before or after the season a couple of reasons that I have heard maybe not on here but other places. 1. KSHSAA does not what to conflict with other sports that they support such as Football Cross Country in the Fall, and Track, Baseball, Golf in the spring. For Example the Wrestling Coach is holding Free Style practice that conflict with Track Practice and in turn the Wrestler enjoys Wrestling so he doesn't go out Track which hurts the Track team and makes the Track coach upset.
This is probably a small school problem were we have to encourage kids to be three sport athletes to keep numbers up in each program. As a Coach you expect some help from the Football Coach to get Athletes out for Wrestling or the other sport in the Winter and In turn they want you to return the favor. Same thing applies in the spring on getting Athletes to run Track or Play Baseball.
2. KSHSAA fears that they will have to pay Coaches for their time and efforts if they have a freestyle season.
These two reasons are the Activities Associations way of supporting all programs they recognize and protecting the schools.
I think both can be worked around. Hold practice in the evening after the track/baseball practices. Try to have a Schedule that allows the Athletes to compete in both sports if they wish.
As far as the School paying me. Ha, Ha, Any Wrestling Coach ever figured up your salary based on the hour. I recommend that you don't but that is not the reason I coach in the first place. I enjoy the students and the sport and that is worth a lot more to me.
I remember this conversation has gone on for years. In reference to Randy's Comment above. I think at one point they brought up that Oklahoma was allowed to Coach wrestlers after the High School season in Freestyle because their Coaches association had made a presentation on how the two were so different that they weren't the same sport. Which allowed the coaches to coach the same kids because they were in a different sport.

Putting the dead horse aside ... yes, it has been brought (in some fashion) before KSHSAA before. As I recall one of their arguments, was that Freestyle and Greco is still wrestling!
