District one 8-88 open class is down in numbers this year. We have been to Emporia, Meriden, Rossville, Manhattan and Atchison this year and brackets have only been averaging three wrestlers. At Atchison there were only two. How are the other Districts looking at this age and weight? I have been watching the novice results as they are published and would like to encourage D1 8-88 novice wrestlers to try some of the open tournaments. We hope to see you on Saturdays!

This weight class is relatively new. It's first year was the March 2000 State tournament series. I went back and checked and for each of the three years that it has been in existence all four districts have each had four qualifiers to send to State. That is not always the case in each weight class, so I do believe the statewide numbers warrant this weight class. Sometimes I think we jump too fast in weight for some of the bigger wrestlers (this one I believe used to be 73, 76, 80 and then 95).
Many early season smaller tournaments combine weight classes. In this age group 80 or 95 could be combined with 88 to make for more matches for the kids. I know this is not ideal for equal matchups but many would think it is better than 0-2 matches in these early season tournaments.
