The Metro Classic should be opened state wide. It would be a long trip for some but well worth it. I'm sure this has been brought up before, any chance of this happening? Most of the better wrestlers in Mo. are close to KC so they always bring a lot of state champs and runner-ups. The Kansas side brings good competition each year but this year most of my picks for Kansas won't get the opportunity. Here is my Ks. list

112- Vesta
119- Furches
125- Cox
130- Napier
135- Maple
140- Means
145- Watson
152- Detmer
160- Caldwell
171- Hinckley or Arnberger
189- Beard
215- Kriss
285- ????

I know I left out 321A but I honestly don't know which ones are seniors so fill me in if I made an error on my list. I would love to see all the state champs from both sides go head to head.

Everybody wants part of the other guys' action. If you live around Wichita, why not have a "Classic with North Oklahoma. Pittsburg work out something with SW Missouri and NE Oklahoma, but not sure you want to tangle with Monett, Neosho, Seneca. Western Kansas surely could do something with Colorado, same same for Nortern Kansas and Southern Nebraska. Lots of possibilities out there. All it would take is a town, CC, etc to sponsor. But, I sense most posters just want to talk about something, and have somebody do the work for them In this age of welfare it seems that many in the wrestling community wants something handed to them. Me! Me! Where's mine? Line from the movie "if you build it they will come".

i think that south east kansas and south west mo would be one hell of a match up, look at how many the sek league put in the finals

It's just not what the classic is about. It was started by people on both sides that were very interested in giving kids from the METRO area some showcase. The kids from the west had all the spotlight they need. As much as I want to win this match (and my Missouri friends know this is true lol)it is more about having a showcase for Metro wrestlers to perform and for kids from each side of the border to get it on. You have the east west match and you have various state duals in freestyle but this is the only deal that is just for these guys. We are what we are. It was not started to benifit the entirity of either state rather to give our kids in this area a showcase and help some state colleges with their scholarships. Maybe someday there will be other matches like the one you envision but that is not the purpose of this match by design and I think it has been very successful at meeting it's purpose. Would I like to win more, sure I would, but that isn't really the point here. We want our kids around here to have something special and that is what it has done. If you come and I hope you all do, Troy Hodges has created an amazing program which is awfully good reading. If all of you buy that and read it, you will enjoy it No.1 and you will see the history of it and that will make sense to you I think. He does an amazing job with that program. You will enjoy it. Hope all of you come and see the meet. March 11th and KCK Community College. It will be a great night of wrestling.

So you think the Kansas kids have no chance against Monett, Neosho, and Seneca? I think you are wrong. If I were in a position and had the contacts to set up a tournament like this I would. Not everyone that posts on this site can get things like this done, most of us enjoy wrestling and like to see good matchups. I was simply asking if this had been discussed before.

As a movie guy, and one who loves the movie Field of Dreams, I always like giving clarification here, the voice never said; "If you build it they will come." That was a mistake on the part of the character played by Kevin Costner, the voice actually said, "If you build it he will come." It was speaking of the characters father, not a group of ball players. I know a petty thing, but like I said, as a movie guy, I like getting at least the concept right. As to the welfare argument, actually sounds like a, "it's my ball and I'm not going to let anyone play with it argument, more than a "welfare" argument. If one would prefer to keep the "local zeal fine, I understand that and can appreciate it, but let's make sure that it doesn't become a Kansas vs. Missouri thing then, because it isn't it is a KC Kansas Metro area, vs a KC Missouri Metro area thing, but certainly not a Kansas vs. Missouri. I'm not just talking about the best being from the Wichita area, although I would put a Beard, Caldwell, and yes a Maple up against almost anyone in folkstyle. I am also talking about some of our best being in a Colby, a Clay Center, A Columbus area, small communities where wrestling also excels.

I agree. I have been to all but one of the classics and they are great for the metro area. I guess what I should have said was a seperate MO vs Ks tournament and not changing the metro classic.

I think that would be a great idea and support that, I also like the idea of a Kansas / Oklahoma thing, and would love to see kids from all across the state invited.

Did not say or mean that Kansas kids could not keep up with SW Mo kids. Don't think many in Kansas know much about those small MO towns and their wrestling. Me neither and I grew up in SW MO 50 years ago. Monett was FB town, Neosho was a BB town. What I know is what I read in the KC newspapers about the towns and the MO State wrestling tournaments. Good wrestlers in that whole tri state area (KS, MO. OK). Don't know if thet wrestle in Arkansas. It would make for a good tri state area wrestling tournament. They even play soccer in SW Mo now. Who would have thunk it. I think Cassvile was a soccer state champ.

What I was trying to do was energize those who keep saying we need this, we want this, change this, why don't you change so we can play. On and on and on. Get off their duffs and go out and find a sponsor, find a location, etc. Now here is a brain fart. Go talk to the Kansas National Guard---they may jump at a chance to sponsor something in-state. I think the US Army sonsors the Metro Classic.

The Metro Classic has been wildly successful. I look forward to it every year. However, a true border war would be far more successful. It would require a larger venue but I can't think of any argument against a state vs. state dual.

Yep I think that is a great idea but you have been to this match, it would be hard to imagine anything being very much more successful that it has been or continues to be. It is wild and fun. Easily the best high school event in this area. Hope you are all there. You are right there is no aregument against all those other matches, Kansas - Okla, Iowa, Colorado, Oklahoma, all those matches would be great. Let me tell you from exprience though it is tough to put them on. You can't believe the work Coach Ulmer and Hodges, the Buntins (think I spelled that wrong, all the people on the Missouri side and our side do on this. Doing one meet is fun, doing it for a decade is hard work. Hey tell you what you get one going and I will help you with it, I promise.

I totally agree. A state wide selection would be awesome. The best guys I wrestled from Missouri in high school, college, and at the Olympic level were from St. Louis. . . Purler and Sammy Henson.

I would also like to see them select guys from any grade. If a freshman is the best guy, put him in the ring. Leave no doubt.

I think the idea of one state's best against a neighboring state has a lot of appeal but would be very difficult to pull off for many reasons. This event works very well for the metro area and should be left as is for that reason. Besides, as a member of the southcentral region of Kansas I feel that metro-KCKS needs it more than we do.
