i think that should be up to the coaches, and i think that more of them should step up and tell parents NO. in my opinion a novice is a wrestler with no more than 2 years of experience, and a less than .300 winning percentage. this sport is tough, and i think that it is wrong to take a kid to a novice tournament based on medals. you know how it is the though, "prepare the child for the path, not the path for the child", too many of us get that backwards. i have coached for 15yrs now, and have had more than a handful of state champions, and about 10 college wrestlers now (since i started with our kids club), and i have only recommended a novice tournamet to about 10 wrestlers. my son is 5yrs old and just started practicing, momma wants to go to "novice" tournaments, and i explained to her that he is 6u they are all "novice" at 6u. now we all know that isn't completely true, but he needs to take some lumps, he needs to get beat and make some mistakes so we have something WORK for. he and i have talked and he understands that i don't care if he wins a single match, as long as he pays attention, learns, and TRIES HIS BEST, that he is a winner to me. i have kept that philosophy since i wrestled way back when, small victories. but i will not take my kid to a novice tournament for a medal, then i kind of lose my credibility on the whole WORK HARD/ TRY YOUR BEST, thing. then it's like hey don't worry, don't try hard, daddy will take care of everything. please adopt a rule within your own club and stick with it, don't be afraid to tell parents NO, it looks bad on you when a kid at a novice tournament walks out and throws a spladle, or pins everyone in 10 seconds.

I know we as a club have a little set policy about winning & placing as a novice before we make you move up to the big boys. I'm asking if there is a set rule within USAW.

A GENERALLY accepted definition of a Novice Wrestler is a first or second year wrestler who has not placed in more than 4 open tournaments, has not won an open tournament, and has not won more than four novice tournaments.

What about thoughts on Jr High Wrestlers and Novice and Open. I was told once that Jr High wrestlers must wrestle Open class during kids wrestling regardless how they did during their Jr High season. Of couse I am talking about 1st year Jr High Wrestlers. Most 2nd year Jr High Wrestlers seem ready for Kids Open tourneys. I am of the thought that most Jr High Kids need to wrestle Open anyway because they are so close to High School.

The answer tends to get a big murky and the definition varies from person to person and club to club.

Well let me say this my son wrestled for the first time last year. He qualified for the state tourney at 8 and under 88. He now cannot wrestle novice, because most flyers say first or second year wrestler, no state qualifiers. Its hard because this year we wont wrestle novice and he has only won one match. But he will be fine because if I take him to all theses novice tourneys and he wins he will think he has nothing to work for. Just so you all know its not about trophy hunting it should be for your child to get better as a wrestler. That is the whole purpose of all theses wrestling clubs is to start them out young and build thier confidence. So that when they do get into competitive sports they will be self confident toward themselves. So what im saying is if you think he/she is a novice take them there if not dont, its pretty much based on honesty.

If this weekend is a look at this novice year tournies than some of dominant novice kids might try some open just to get out at decent time, maybe?

Every Wrestler and weight class/ age group is different. Some weight classes in some age groups a first year kids could win tournaments and qualify for states. Other weight Classes and age groups it's a dog fight year after year for all kids to win tournaments and qualify for states. Coaches and Parents need to use common sense and be fair to their own kids and the other kids in that age group and weight bracket.

He now cannot wrestle novice, because most flyers say first or second year wrestler, no state qualifiers. Well last weekend at Ark City I saw tons of novice kids. This is a very good thing for the sport. But to see kids that have placed or won open touraments or even were a "Novice State Champion" just is real discouraging. I think novice is to cut your teeth on and then move on. I would just like to see people take a stronger stand on this. JMO
