I am pretty excited to see a lot of tournaments using Satellite weigh ins. I think with the way the economy is right now and tournaments trying to keep their numbers up, this is a great tool to use.

I guess the question is what are the standards for having a satellite weigh in. Are clubs allowing a trusted kids coach from a neighboring community wrestling club conduct the weigh ins or are clubs using some standard such as a "reputable" HS head coach in charge of the weigh ins, but organized by the community wrestling club. Is this something that needs to be put into vote during next years meeting? Not sure myself. Just some food for thought.

We are going to Paola this Saturday and after work today I am driving down a group to weigh in. I don't mind (I like to sleep in.) But Paola is still an hour drive from Lawrence and I know I would have loved to drive to St. James, Topeka, or anywhere closer, and weigh in if they were approved as a satellite weigh in site.

Good luck to everyone wrestling this weekend in Kansas!

Ark City contacted a couple of clubs that we have a good relationship with and asked them to host the weigh-in. I have noticed that most clubs that host a weigh-in are more strict than the club running the tournament. Ark City will not be giving 1/10 of a pound tonight. I heard several stories of Maize, Derby, and Circle not giving any weight for the Ark City Tourney. Most clubs feel obligated to be more strict since they are intrusted with the weigh-in.

The only reason we would need to vote is if Subs and Districts want to have satellite weigh-ins.

I agree, remote weigh-ins are an excellent way to lessen the burden for families especially in tough times. I would also recommend finding a club who you trust and try to keep the procedure consistent.

I would also offer the following ideas for consideration.

1.With remote weigh-ins available at convenient locations what about going to only Friday night weigh-ins. Imagine how smooth the starting of tournaments would go if we eliminated the morning weigh-ins/changes/fighting to see brackets (could be released on track the night before also) etc etc.

2. Utilizing the weight feature when using track. You can list the actual weight of the wrestler (Goddard did this last year and it was nice to see where our own kids were at with regards to weight). It also brings integrity to the weigh-ins.

Implementing things like remote weigh-in moves us in the right direction.

I know I'll probably catch some flack for this, .... so be it.

Personally, I don't see the need to limit remote site options. I think we should allow every club to weigh their own wrestlers in for non qualifiing tournaments. Some will cheat, I understand that, but I feel 99% of us are honest, and would conduct ourselves accordingly. Last year, we allowed anyone that came to our tournament the option of weighing in themselves. We opened up weigh-ins Thursday night with the thought that alot of clubs will be having practice that night anyway. With the new 24 hour rule change, we won't be able to do that this year, but we will probably allow anyone that comes to our tournament this year to weigh in at their own facility on Friday night. By the way, our tournament will be on the 27th of February :-). I hope to get our/your tournament sanctioned next week.

Let the lashings begin...

I also might be another of the opposite. If you live in the boonies away from the cities, friday night weigh-ins only cause a problem. They only have them in certain cities and if you are not close, then you have to get a hotel.

I know for a fact that we won't be going to valley center this year because they are only doing friday night weigh-ins. We would love to go to it again, since we won a open division there last year, but we will find somewhere else that is closer and will allow saturday weigh-ins.

I wouldn't say get rid of Saturday morning weigh ins. I think you need to have them, especialy for those who live close by and don't have to wake at 4:30 am to get to the tourney to weigh in. I think the more satalite weigh ins you have the further away from the tourney the more wrestlers you would have. I would get up at 5 am to go to a tourney 2 plus hours away to make it for coaches meeting if the night before my son weighed in at a site 30 minutes away. Like Paola tonight, I would have loved to weigh in at a site 30 mins away but instead I had an 2 hours on the road with more gas spent. I would have left in the am but a kid needed to be weighed in tonight. How many more wrestlers or how much more money would parents be saved to have a satelite weigh in at a Topeka or a Lawrence school. I know of some parents who like the competition in Paola so they get a room in the KC area. If times continue then those parents may decide not to attend, causing less oportunites for a kid to wrestle or other kids to see good competition.

I am not bad mouthing Paola. It's a great tourney to start the year with great competition, tough round robins, and they run a pretty tight ship with the last fours years parents getting out around 3 or so. I am definatly excited for Paola to continue with their tourney!

As far as clubs allowing to weigh in their own kids, I don't know about that. That may be a whole new thread!

Be safe on the road and good luck tomorrow!

I agree with letting your own club weigh their wrestlers on Friday nights before tournaments and submitting their team's weights so the brackets could be made that night and start the tournament very smoothly the next morning...if there are no shows/scratches on Saturday morning then just have the coaches submit them and they become BYE's...it's pretty simple...even if that drops the bracket to something not too appeasing then it really doesn't take too much to combine a bracket in the morning...I remember back in HS and college that we got to weigh in at our own facility and our AD usually did it so the coach would be out of the loop...I think that we all have enough integrity to do the right thing if this were allowed...if you don't then you really don't understand the true meaning of what wrestling teaches anyway and you probably should just find some other hobby!!

Integrity is doing the right thing even when nobody is looking!!
