Tiger Wrestling Dominates Conference Opener

The Fort Hays State wrestling team competed in its first conference dual of the 2009-10 season on Thursday, January 14. The No. 14 ranked Tigers took on RMAC foe, No. 20 ranked Mesa State, at Gross Memorial Coliseum. The Tigers started and ended strong and won the dual by a commanding score of 35-6.
Fort Hays won the first three matches of the night with a decision by #2 Tommy Edgmon over Tyler Nelson followed by an overtime victory for Travis Kuhn over Chris Rubalcaba of the Mavericks. The Tigers #5 ranked Andre Harrison had no opponent at 141 pounds, which raised the lead to 12-0. The next two matches were the only ones on the night that went the way of Mesa State as Tyler Juby defeated Levi Younkin at 149 pounds and #2 Chase Walker defeated #3 Danny Grater in a match-up of ranked opponents, cutting the Tiger lead to 12-6 at intermission.
The Tigers dominated after intermission, starting with a 7-2 decision by #7 Blake Malloy over Matthew Chavez and a technical fall by Shawn Kuhlman over Justin Grosse by a score of 17-2. Two of the final three matches resulted in falls for the Tigers with Chance Rencountre pinning Chris Cielinski at 2:03 and heavyweight Justin Glenn pinning Trevor Stapp at 1:15. The 197-pound match resulted in an overtime win for Steven Kyler over Shane Miller.
With the win, the Tigers improve to 2-3, 1-0 in the conference, while the Mavericks fall to 1-2 both overall and in the conference.
The next action for the Tigers comes Tuesday, January 19 when they travel to Wichita to take on Newman in a dual starting at 7 pm.
