Just a thought, but I am wondering if our 4 wrestling Districts maybe need to have a designated tournament coordinator to help ensure each tournament held in their district are better scheduled during the wrestling season. I hate to see area tournaments have to cancel due to low numbers because other tourneys in the same district are pulling kids that would normally attend. This weekend in distrcit 1 north we had silver lake, topeka thunderbirds, and KCWC with the last two having to cancel. Those who registered with KCWC, I assume some won't have a chance to wrestle this weekend. I'd love to be able to hold a tourney in Lawrence, but at the same time I want to support tournaments in our sub district and district. Not to mention the opportunities for our experienced kids to compete in national level tournaments, ie Liberty and Tulsa, without pulling those kids who would make a local tourney's bracket real strong. Holding a tourney is a great way to raise $ for a club but with having to cancel tourneys, those clubs end up losing money. Just a thought I wanted to throw out there.

This is a great idea...
I've suggested for a while now to try to set up your calendar at a district meeting but to have someone actually overseeing this would be a huge help.
I know sometimes you run into scheduling conflicts with the school on the building and get stuck with the date you are given but to set these dates up at a district meeting or have someone like your talking about would really help.
Plus they could also help smaller clubs maybe come together and run a combined tournament.
Help set up satellite weigh in locations.
Help organize table workers from other clubs if a tournament is in need.
Maybe help approach companies as a group to lower the cost of awards and medals.
It could also get even bigger by having like the biggest tournaments in a district or two districts run a point series at some of the bigger tournaments. That way if four tournaments gave points then at a final tournament towards the end of the season they could get a special series award.
All of these things will improve wrestling in our state and help clubs keep their entry cost down and heads above water. And that helps grow the sport.

the lesson here would be to plan early. get a solid line of communication with the AD at your school, get 3 possible dates early (before district meeting), so everyone can have a chance. i talked to some coaches from linn county and they fear that they will be forced to cancel their tourney this coming weekend. for some clubs this is their only source of income.

let's work together to solve this problem.

Why do you suppose all of these canceled tournaments clubs did not change their tournament date for another date when they saw, as early as the state meeting, that some other club/clubs were also on that same date?

i understand your point sportsfan, yet some of these tournaments weren't on the calendar in december.

i don't think we are all on the same page here. WE HAVE TO WORK TOGETHER.

there are many reason why a club is forced to have a tournament on certain days, facility availibility being #1.

is there any better solution that the above mentioned? if not let's keep moving FORWARD. NO FEAR- CHANGE INCLUDED.

Sometimes you can't change the date. Our High school gave us one date we could use.

No that is not my point. My point is, NONE of these clubs have any other options due to facilities not being available.

I agree, but it doesn't need coordination, instead it requires sacrifice of every club out there.

YES! First off, every district should adopt a policy that if a club is hosting a qualifier they should have to announce at the time of the bidding process if they also intend to host an invitational as well. IF a club says that they are going to have an invitational, all other things being equal, then you vote for the other potential host club that is NOT having an invitational.
Second, KEEP YOUR KIDS WRESTLING IN STATE! Unless you have a kid who is tearing up all the competition in Kansas then keep them wrestling here. Even then, if they are taking first every week here, then try moving them up a weight class and see if they still do that. Tulsa would be the one tournament I would make an exception for because of it's tradition and close proximity to Kansas.
Third, not to pick on anyone in particular but it's easy to get on a forum and say we need to do this or that to help these clubs. It's a lot harder to actually do something that requires some sacrifice of yourself and your club to help out. Just remember this, without all of these Kansas club tournaments there will be NO wrestling period in this state.

I agree about the qualifier.
With the limited number of dates in the year I think a club should only hole one tournament a year.

not accusing you of stealing my idea, just overlooked it.

I saw it but neither you or I are the first to mention that. It has been that way forever.

why didn't you just say this in the first place? i will never understand why some folks don't speak their mind from the start. just differences in personalities i guess. NOW FOR THE IMPORTANT STUFF.

i'm sorry BUT i think the solution is COORDINATION + SACRIFICE- that IS WHAT WORKING TOGETHER MEANS.

you are right it's is easy to get on here and post an idea, the hard part is the work taken to make changes. BUT isn't this a good starting place?besides the best place to voice opposing views? the time it saves from the state meeting is undeniable.

lastly in district 1 south, Pittsburg State has been the host facility for about 10 years now. it's THE best facility in district 1 to host such an event (expo center excluded). it has more than ample seeding, it has enough floor space for all age divisions to wrestle on at least half mats (8u half 10u,12u,14u,HS) ALL on full mats. The problem is it costs the Pittsburg Wrestling Club $$$ to host the tourney there, PSU takes all concessions, the gate and brackets are the only chance for profit.

I truly believe in sacrifice. HOWEVER sacrifice is a two way street. IF IT'S TRULY FOR THE KIDS, there may need to be some sacrifice taken from the supporters of your position, IF and WHEN situations like this arise.

just trying to improve things for my kid, have been involved with coaching for 15 years, haven't really been interested in the rest, until now. he is 5, i want what is best for him and the rest of the KS KIDS.

thanks for playing devil's advocate OR stating an opposing point of view, if the changes are to be for ALL, WE MUST AGAIN............COORDINATE AND SACRIFICE- WORK TOGETHER to make the best possible decisions.

I see nothing in your description of Dist. 1 that couldn't be handled by the assistant District Director. All of our qualifiers can be wrestled in any school with two gyms. That sounds like a district problem that should be handled at that level.

you are right it can be handled by the district director. we have facilities that can handle subs, just not as well as the gym at psu. it's not a problem at all, just a different view of your version 1 club=1 tournament.

again different points of view are a good thing. don't you agree?

Oh Sportsfan---you evidently are not from District 1......many years ago Wellsville, Ottawa, Chanute, KC clubs a couple of times and maybe a few more I'm forgetting all tried to have the sub-qualifier's......those days were a little tenuous to say the least on everyone involved.....PSU Weede Gymnasium although costs $$$$ is the best venue south subs have....I really don't see the causation to jeapordize/penalize the Pittsburg Wrestling Club for their sake of tournament hosting.

Can't we just work on an amiable solution with all of the creative minds we have on this board?

No I should have made that clear, I'm from District 2. We don't have the problems you encounter.
