I was reading a profile on a kid from University of Central Missouri (Jacob Beck if I recall) and it mentioned he is only 1 of 2 wrestlers to ever win a HWT state title 4 times in High school.

Here is my question...will we ever have a guy finish as a 4x champ in 285? I know the Beck thing was 4 years at 285, but heck what about just winning it 4 times above the 189 weight? Maybe we have had someone, but I can't think for 215/285 (especially 285, so I will stick with that)

Looking back historically the Sunflower State has had a few 3xers at 285(some may have done other weights, but for the sake of HWT, I am mentioning that they finished at the BIG WEIGHT) :

Pretty solid list of wrestlers winning 3rd state title (at 285):

Leslie Zuege (2x champ and also won the Grand State)-St.Francis

Jordan Bedore-Goodland

Andrew Ubben-Phillipsburg

Duane Zlatnick-Rossville

Jeff Boyle-Norton (only won it 1 year at 285, was 171 and 215)

Atticus Disney (2x at Hwt I believe. Once at 215)

Boyle won at 189 in '95; 215 in '96 and 275 in '97

Jeff could have won 275 in '96 as well had he chosen to wrestle up.

I believe Michael Sprigg from Norton was a 4 x state placer at heavyweight which was then 275. 4th in 4A in '02. Runner up in 3A in '03, and champ in 3A in '04 and '05.

Not too shabby!

What weight did Scott Staab (Plainville) win it at in 95?

The early 80's had some beasts too.

I would put Les Miller (Ark City) or Steve Nave (Coffeyville) up against Boyle and Disney. They were put together. Miller went on to play for the San Diego Chargers. Not sure about Steve Nave (Doug Vanderlinden may be able to enlighten us) They battled from 81-83. They were intimidating specimens at the time. Not sure how they would have matched up on the mat but in the alley or parking lot my money would have been on these two warriors.

Larry Grieve was a 3xer from Osborne around this time as well.

Back when there was a Grand State the two winners were Culbertson and Zuege. I went to Grand State but I don't remember watching either of them but I am guessing they had to be pretty solid too.

I was looking back at the old list and saw that a Gary Gregory was a state champion in 1972 for the State School for the Visually Handicapped. Anybody remember watching this guy wrestle. Surely we have some early 70's guys that hang around technology of the internet.

Shaun Shubert from trego won it in 95 he beat Eilers from plainville and Staab won it at 215 he beat Haflinger from Trego. In 95 there was an article in the Hays Daily News about Shubert and one of the Deines kids wrestling off weekly and how they went back and forth throughout the year. I believe Shad Jacobs from Pburg was a 4time placer in hwt

Duane Zlatnik a 3 three time heavyweight state champion from Rossville HS was definitiely one of Kansas all time great heavyweight wrestling champions.

Duane was recently named as 1st team left offensive guard on the KU football team's depth chart for the upcoming season. I believe this is a change of position for Duane who had been a defensive lineman at KU prior to this year. Duane is listed at 6' 4" 326 sophomore on the depth chart.

Take it easy on those Cornhuskers this year, Duane!
