2010-2011 Newman University Wrestling – Season Outlook

“CHECK ‘EM OFF"

The Newman University Wrestling team has put itself in a great position to feed off of their 2010 appearance at the NCAA National Championships last winter. The slogan for last year’s team was “Tradition…Starts Today” and that is what two individuals (Blake Fisher, RS-SR and Mitch Arnold, JR) did for the program by gaining post-season berths at the NCAA National Tournament in Omaha, Neb. “Let’s see what we can do in Kearney, Neb. in 2011. We are going to still be young, but our returning sophomores are going to be ahead of the rest of the pack with the mat time they gained last year as true freshmen,” Coach Ryan Smith said.
This has been one of the most exciting summers in the program’s six-year life. In January 2010, the wrestling team moved from a makeshift room to a more permanent location. The administration and coaching staff raised the necessary funds to make some much needed improvements, which include cardio equipment, wall pads, custom-fit mat, and several other renovations to take this program to the next level. In all, more than $30,000 was raised to make this dream a reality. “This has been our goal since we took this program over two years ago. We knew this program could blossom into something special and I am just glad the current administration had the same progressive goals. This will not only allow us to train at the next level, but will entice some future recruits that we may have missed out on in years past.” Smith said.

Looks like a nice group of wrestlers. We probably, as a kids' organization, need to figure out a way to support the few college programs that our state has.

That goes both ways--you guys just let me know what we can do as a program to support all of you guys. Feel free to shoot me an email or give me a call. Thanks. Coach Smith

I have an idea! We have all of these crazy East vs West and such how about PRIVATE vs PUBLIC school dual at the end of the season at NEWMAN. Coach Smith is really pushing things there and Wichita is a good central location with lots of rabid supporters. Lets spice it up by makeing the matches 2,2,2 with college out of bounds and the teams will be assembled using college weights. Surely we can get this going and pack the stands. Bob Gonzales to MC, live radio, Flo Wrestling, and internet feed.

I replied earlier without taking a good look at the schedule, but it has been pointed out to me that several of their duals are on Sundays. A great day for the kids to go out and see some college wrestling, without having to skip a practice or tourney.

Heck, not a bad drive from anywhere in KS so I would hope to see lots of HS kids there. Their line up is dang good. I really want to make the Governor's Cup this year.

I believe their home tournament is on a Sunday as well, so you don't just see 1 or 2 teams, but a whole bunch I would assume. How many and what teams will be appearing at the Newman Invite? Is that a team scoring event since it is not listed as an open?

It will be an invite and team score will be kept. Teams that will be at Newman in December: OBU, Wayland, Neosho, CMSU, Central Baptist, Truman, Central Oklahoma

Pretty interesting mix there. I would assume Newman, Central Ok, Neosho and Central Missouri would have pretty good fanbase there with tons of Kansas connections. Truman being nearby in Missouri should do well with travel although they have not had the strongest of teams in recent memory. I would like to see some great support from the state of Kansas for OBU, Wayland and Central Baptist which are all 1st year teams and could probably use a good pat on the back or just a handshake and hi for being part of adding the sport and not subtracting.
