SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Six Cal Poly wrestlers defeated their opponent twice to solidify their bids as the No. 1 matman in their respective weight classes at the annual Green vs. Gold Dual Meet on Saturday in Mott Gym.

Jake Tanenbaum defeated Britain Longmire by 4-2 and 8-1 decisions at 125 pounds.

And at 285, Atticus Disney pinned Jim Powers in the first period and also posted a 6-1 decision to clinch the starting nod.

Cal Poly officially opens the 2010-11 season next Saturday, hosting Cal State Fullerton for a 2 p.m. Pac-10 dual meet in Mott Gym.

Both Jake and Atticus looked in good form at the wrestle-offs. It's nice to have a pair of Kansas athletes anchoring the light and the heavy of a good Cal Poly team. Look for Cal Poly to pull some surprises. Iowa backed out of a dual with them (as well as national duals) because of a strong possibility of not winning....

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Brandan Rocha, Steven Vasquez and Atticus Disney earned falls to lead Cal Poly to a 36-14 victory over Cal State Fullerton in a Pacific-10 Conference dual wrestling meet Saturday afternoon in Mott Gym.

Rocha pinned Drew Erickson in 1 minute, 27 seconds at 133 pounds, while Vasquez pinned Dominic Borelli in 6:34 at 174 pounds as Cal Poly bolted to a 26-9 lead and cruised to the season-opening victory.

Disney, the transfer from Minnesota, pinned Kurt Klimek in 1:04 in a battle of nationally ranked wrestlers at 285 pounds. Disney was ranked No. 25 while Klimek was No. 18.

Cal Poly also received technical falls from 141-pounder Boris Novachkov and 165-pounder Ryan DesRoches while Barrett Abel and Ryan Smith both won by major decision.

Novachkov was a 16-1 winner over Peter Hoang while DesRoches posted the same score against Titan 165-pounder Bryce Whitehead.

Abel, a transfer from UC Davis, which dropped wrestling last spring, earned a 15-3 major decision at 157 in his first bout as a Mustang while Smith was a 12-4 winner over Kyle Bergstedt at 197.

Cal State Fullerton winners were Andre Gonzalez with an 11-6 decision at 125, Nick Jordan with a fall in 28 seconds at 149 and Righetti High School graduate Todd Noel with a 16-1 technical fall at 184.

Cal Poly will compete in the Fullerton open at Cal State Fullerton next Saturday.
