and if so are there any pro or cons about wrestling either one over the other.

i appreciate any advise on this issue. thanks

Yes you are correct they can't wrestle both at the same time. I would say the competition level at junior high is not as high as club wrestling a con and wrestling for your school and town and getting the team aspect as a pro.

Con: Way more mat time in club wrestling!
Pro: The team experience and the chance to learn from new coaches with maybe a new point of view or fresh set of eyes.
Con: it seems like one half of the state wrestling MS during one part of the year and the other half is going while the other is done!
Con: miss some big tournaments JOC, Tulsa, etc

Personal opinion: its part of they sport, I think they all need to do it!

Jr. high season is over here in dec. So the boys can wrestle club after season. Problem with that some jr. high's are stilling wrestling. Two tournaments this year had 14 and under but not enough to wrestle.

Con:Competition level is much higher at club.
Pro:If you have an awesome jr high coach your kid gets to practice everyday!!
Con: a lot of kids in jr high are out for rastling bc their friends are going out so there are a lot of beginners. Technique will be geared for them and your boy will be the demonstration wrestler.
Con: you can't even practice at the club if you are in jr high wrestling.
Pro: Team team team.... However if you have a great kids club you are getting that team concept anyway.

We will wrestle club.

I know wrestling is an individual sport but I think middle school programs need our support. If everyone keeps skipping MS programs then that program goes away and when you don't have a decent MS program it USUALLY (not always) has an effect on the HS program.
MS wrestling don't start here til Dec and that stinks. I wish the whole state was on the same schedule. It would make MS programs stronger and better turnout at club tournaments

At least here on the East side of the State, middle school season is over so quickly, the kids that have been wrestling club really don't loose much even though the competition is definately a lot lower. Sometimes by having the more experienced kids participate in the middle school season they get some of thier friends to participate that haven't been exposed to wrestling before and some of those newbies then continue on into club wrestling and high school wrestling.

We are just the opposite!
We get a lot of the new kids that plan to wrestle MS
Show them basics and then they go off to MS and then come back to us
I just wish MS wrestling was on the same schedule state wide.
I think it would only make it stronger!

Without our Middle School Program we would have NO high school program. Our High School coach started coaching our Middle school team three years ago and we have gone from having 25 kids on the high school team to 48. The kids that have done kids club are the best for talking their friends into trying the short 4 week season we have in Eastern Kansas. Many of them stay for kids club and even more are wrestling as freshman in high school. By being involved in the Team idea they soon loose the false notion that high school wrestling is an individual sport. Something that if our kids clubs would get involved in duals we could promote and we would see the success of our high school programs grow.

I have mixed feeling on this since I coach at the high school level, but speaking as a father of a 7th grader I let him decide what he wanted to do. He did miss going to all the big tournaments and told me after the season that he just wants to wrestle with the club next year...These tournaments will benefit your kids more in the long run as Mr. Eck pointed out.

My son as a 7th grader couldn't wait to be on his MS team as a 7th grader, to be with his friends who wrestled club as well as to be able to represent his school and get some dual action. He had a blast and going into club season, our MS ends in Dec, he was strong right off the bat. In retrospect, he didn't get a lot of time off though, because by the 1st of April, he had 70 plus matches. At state I could tell he was tired but MS duals ended up firing him up again, and he ended up practicing through the summer for the 1st time.

In his 8th grade year, we, or probably more me, struggled with if he was going to wrestle MS or club, mainly because of the competition. He decided to wrestle MS again. This year he was a little disappointed because he didn't have lots of kids to workout with, but I saw a huge improvement in his leadership skills. He was voted a team captain and ended up learning new skills that will carry him a long way. He had to help his teammates to become better wrestlers, and not just on the mat. At our MS banquet just last night, he stepped up to do a motivational reading in front of everyone and didn't blink an eye. Same kid who when he was 6 ran off the stage at a musical. smile.

Your kid loses valuable wrestling time by skipping club, but there are so many more pluses by allowing your kid to be involved with something bigger then just their individual success on the mat. Plus, I got to turn my boy over to his coach, while I sat in the stands and got to be just Dad. Something I knew I'd have to learn before HS, and was harder for me then him.

Just a day he before his reading, to quote his MS coach,"he hit a couple walls in Tulsa," but during the reading he jumped over another and I just felt in the end, it was all worth it.

He's still got plenty of kids folkstyle left, freestyle and greco, if he wants, and 4 years of HS. If he missed some mat time with good wrestlers, he'll make up for it.

Not only "pluses" for your kid, but the other wrestlers as well! That is how you build successful teams/programs at the high school level.
