This is my first post and a topic at the forefront of my mind has been if talk of Grand State happening in the near future would occur.
While quite a few teams travel the state and face a variety of schools during the season(i.e. St. James, Gardner Edgerton, Shawnee Mission Northwest, Louisburg to name a few)this would still allow for some intriguing matchups that otherwise wouldn't happen. I realize the small vs. big class event is a good one and the KC Metro Classic is as well. However, I feel taking the top 4 placers in each class in the 4 state tournaments and having them square off the weekend after the Metro Classic would be great.
I feel it would bring a lot of positive exposure to the sport and determine a true "all class champion" in each weight class. This would allow another chance for colleges to see the top kids in the state. I am curious what other people's thoughts are and what you have heard recently.

It's not going to happen because KSHSAA will have to offer "Grand States" for at least other the individual sports that are offered.
Kansas wrestlers do have the opportunity to wrestle in a "Grand State" style tournament in Topeka at the end of March now. With the addition of the High School division for USAWKS Championship series a "Grand State" champion can nearly be determined. I say nearly because most years the top seniors will be wrestling at Virginia Beach for Senior Nationals. However, the interest level of many Kansas high school age wrestlers leaves after the KSHSAA season is over so you don't get to see every wrestler who could contend for a "Grand State" title in the USAWKS Championship series.

Ricky Bobby,
I agree with your post completely. One thing that I would add is that a number of the high school wrestlers that do go on to the USAWKS Championship series don't want to maintain their weight for another month so you won't see them in the same weight class that they wrestled during the high school season.

There are no conflicting events in 2011!
At least for this year, Senior Nationals will be the week following USAWKS Folkstyle State (April 1 and 2).

I believe the way to get this done is for a person or organization to step up and offer to pay the rental fee for a facility the week following high school state. For example, someone offers to pay for any one of the arenas, (Bicentenial, Hutch, Koch, Hartman, etc.), and the profits, if any, are donated back to KSHSAA. Remember, we don't need to run more than 3 mats for this tournament. Assuming there would be profits then the sponsoring agent could be reimbursed for the cost of the arena out of those monies. At least one of these facilities should be empty that weekend as ******ball regionals are going on at the schools. The wrestlers would be more inclined to maintain their weight for another week and I don't believe spring sports practices will have started.

Seems once a year this topic comes up on the forum. I wanted to respond to the part of the post that talks about not being able to replace with a grand state because then they would have to offer it up to other sports.(Please pardon me if I read it wrong). My question is why? Other states do it so why can't KS? I will refer to Jersey, well...because that is what I know, where they have dual state playoffs to satisfy the "team" champs for each Group. Groups 1 thru 4 and even Parochial schools are seperated. They then start the individual tournaments leading to state...all groups lumped together. They start on the district level(32 I believe) where Top 3 advance to Regionals(8 I think), where the Top 3 advance to the 1st rd of state. i think they call this Super-Regions now...it's really just the preliminary rounds of state. All leading to one champ regardless of school size. Both the team dual playoffs and individual are exciting in their own right. So I guess the question is still..why not? I don't know the answer but know it gets tiring discussing something that nobody seems to want to change. If I had my choice, i'd rather see a dual state playoff tournament.

I think it could all be fit into normal season parameters...especially if we dropped the no-compete over Christmas Vacation. Oh, I'm sorry...I meant to say "winter break". Boggles my mind why other states can compete then but we can't.
