It's been a while since I was on the mat but one thing I know hasn't changes is wrestlers cut weight. With that said I do not understand why we are being required to lock a wreslers weight in when we register them for a tournament. With my team usually we are requested to sign them up about a week prior to the entre deadline. Every flyer I have seen so far states if they don't make weight they are not able to bump up. I don't understand why we would do this to young wrestlers. For this reason I sign my 6 year old up for the weight class above what he could be wrestling because I will not have him cut weight if he is a little over and don't know what I would tell him if come time to weigh in and he's over that he is not allowed to wrestle that day. Can someone please tell me why we are doing this?

You are doing with your 6U what we routinely do with ALL of our club's kids. If someone is not allowing enough of a buffer for their wrestler then that is their fault. My wrestler is giving up 2+ lbs each tournament and we don't worry about it one bit.

If your tournament is using trackwrestling there is no excuse not to bump up a wrestler. I agree with sports that you really shouldn't be pushing it. Wrestle your kid up and be safe until the three weeks of sub, dist, and state. Then make him eat and drink properly, practice hard and instill the discipline for just those three weeks. Cutting weight ruins the sport for too many young kids. It is better to wrestle and lose than to cut a bunch of weight and be miserable.

I agree with not making your kid cut weight. And I also agree if a tournament is using TW then it should not be an issue with moving wrestlers around to a different weight. But my feeling is that if a young wreslter does not make weight he/she should not get to move weight classes, as this will make tournaments not using TW take that much longer getting started on Saturday morning, as they have to re-bracket. We tell our parents that even if your young wrestler is right on a weight. Move him/her up to the next weight as these kids are growing, and will more than likely be at the next weight by the end of the season.
