What are your thoughts on changing Kansas Kids State to 8th grade and younger? This would allow the 6 & Unders in. After all, there is High School State and Kids State. Maybe this could even re-ignite the Grand State format for High School. Missouri has it right on two issues. The January 1st cutoff and 8th grade and under for Kids State.

My favorite topic, I think it should be cut off at 8th grade and freestyle started immediately after high school state. If there is still a desire for a high school age tournament, follow the format similar to BRUTE nationals, divide up in freshman v freshman, Sophomore vs Sophmore, Junior vs Junior, use high school weight classes, skip the sub and district format. Have it at the same time as kids state if you want--You could blow it up if you wish, promote it nationally--something like the TORNADO ALLEY RALLY,,,SUNFLOWER SHOWDOWN,

Great idea. Is there any interest in putting this idea on the table, including making Kids State 8th grade and younger?

OK follow along with my hairbrained idea:
6 and under usually have their own state tournament.
A lot of people want grand state back.
I know it wouldn't include all the underclassmen, but why not create an 18 and under state or something like that (the only snag you'd run into is a guy that might have flunked and has a weird birtday who might already be 20 finishing up high school!)

Mr Bo Jangles,
It was fun for the High Schoolers to go to kids state for 8 years. Then they have High School State. We wouldn't be taking it away. It would be a true "Kids State" and would help to bring back Grand State for all classes in High School. It would also be a big plus for participation from the 8th graders. I believe that the 7th and 8th graders in the 14 & Under division are discouraged from participating because of the High School influx at the end of the year. That also effects High School participation. An 8th grader that places at State will have a much higher liklihood of pursuing wrestling in High School. Missouri is obviously not hurt by the 8th grade and under rule at their Kids State. The only issue that I see would be a problem is the High Schools that are only 10th, 11th and 12th grade. I would say that those 9th graders should be allowed to participate if they didn't have High School State.

A couple of questions:
1. How will the recent trend towards redshirting 8th graders effect such plans?
2. Even when our high school was 10th thru 12th grade and we had a true junior high the 9th graders were allowed to come to the high school and compete with the older kids. How many junior high systems are still left in the state and do they not allow the 9th graders to join the high school team?

Our high school is 9th-12th grades. The 8th graders compete at the middle school. Our whole league and region is the same way. How do you redshirt an 8th grader? I've never heard of that. Just curious.

Hold them back if they are flunking is what I'd say...if they have the grades then let them through. Chapman let's everybody and their dog through middle school or they used to. I think one kid made it to high school with 4 D's and 2 F's.

I'd rather watch high schoolers who know what they are doing and have competitive matches at Kids State, than the 6 and Unders who tend to switch control positions in a "rolly polly" style quite often.

Nigel would you support an 18 and under age group like I want to see?
