176:1 sounds horrendous! This article is not entirely factual. Let's look at this figure that some are considering a fact!
In Kansas, I would state with almost certainty that every wrestler that wants to wrestle can get a scholarship! Even the kid with a 1.2 gpa and a 14 on the ACT can get a scholarship. Every athlete that we sign at Ottawa, gets a scholarship!!
Granted, that number may be true if your defining the word scholarship, to mean a full wrestling ride offer to a D1 program! But that is not the real world. Very few wrestlers earn a complete athletic ride to college. Most, work off of percentages and stack academics with the offer! Or they look at the full-tuition offers which are still stacked with academics.
Perhaps the number we need to look at are the funded scholarships for each division. D1 gets 9.9 ... D2 gets 9.0 ... D3 does not offer athletic scholarships ... NAIA get 8.5 ... Juco's vary. And, just because that is the maximum does not mean each institution funds that number! (FHSU does not fund 9.0) (this is one of the primary areas in which the Kansas College Wrestling fund was doing some great work)
Reminder to wrestlers ... academics are what matters! Very few of you will earn your living in wrestling!! Life skills and academics are what will get you through this thing called life! My thoughts ... that's the way it should be.
