Thanks for the link, Shane, though I've heard from none of these readers.
Do you have a comment?

Mr. Seminoff,

I'm just a wrestling official, but still a fan at heart. I do feel like there should be more wrestling coverage, but I'm sure you are limited (staff, time, leads, etc.). But as a wrestling fan, it does become disheartening to see very little coverage on our sport but several on Basketball, our hated arch-enemy ;-).

If there's anything I can do to help broaden the scope of wrestling coverage in the Wichita Eagle, let me know, or better yet feel free to search the Ks. Coach's Wrestling Assoc. (KWCA) site at http://www.holton.k12.ks.us/tech/kwca and the forum itself at http://www.usawks.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?

The web site has schedules for mostly every team in the state, and you can sign up and post questions, answers, etc. on the forum. I know there are hundreds of coaches who would love it if you found the time...

FYI: I will copy and post this on the forum for them to see and help your staff in this endeavor.

Shane, here's an e-mail that I sent to a reader this morning. I'm guessing she took you up on your post. If you'd like to post this, go ahead. It might give some insight as to how we do things. Kirk

I understand your frustration with our wrestling coverage, though I would ask that fans not compare wrestling coverage with basketball coverage.
Plain and simple, we have decided over many years that there are two high school sports that are of most interest to our readers: football and basketball. Those sports are going to get more coverage, and I think you'll find that to be the case for just about any paper of any size in this state and many others.

We instituted some changes in our high school sports coverage last summer, hoping it would lead to more of a spotlight on sports other than basketball and football. The wrestling notes that you mentioned are a byproduct of that change. Every high school sport has a weekly notebook. We run them on different days to spotlight them. I think that's a positive change.

We also try to cover key duals on Thursday, and the best tournaments on weekends. Tonight we'll be at the South-Carroll dual. Because of the volume of high school boys basketball tournaments this weekend, we're unable to be at a wrestling tournament.

Yes, manpower and money have a lot to do with coverage decisions. We have two full-time high school sports beat writers (one is currently on maternity leave) and four part-time correspondents. As a slave-driving supervisor, I'd love to have each of them working seven days a week, 10 hours a day. But I can't. So decisions have to be made as to what we can and can't get to. For events that we'd like to be at but can't, we ask the schools' athletic directors or coaches to get us the information. In the case of the Campus wrestling tournament, I'm betting that the information didn't get to us by fax or phone call. That's extremely frustrating.

I've talked with Kirk Seminoff and he said he is attempting to increase the coverage of our sport. He said the best thing for our community to do is try to get everything to his dept. by 10:30 pm the night before you want it to appear.

They/he does not gaurentee that it'll all get in, but the duel and tourney results have a great shot at publishing always...

Keep contacting and they'll see the need to change their coverage!!!
