Alright. Just to let you all know, I'm Kailen Scott ,a freshman from Wellington and I wrestled 152 lbs. for the JV squad this year.
I ,well, let's put it this way, I SUCKED. I didn't win a whole entire match season long.
In March,I was thinking of working my butt off (going to camps, lifting weights and such)and dropping to like around 140-145. My mother says she'd rather me wrestle 140-145 than 152. My coach told me like a week ago that he thinks I should bump up to 160. What should I do? Work my butt off and drop to 140-145 or work my butt off and either stay at 152 or bump-up to 160? I want to be successful these next 3 years in highschool wrestling so I'm asking you coaches and fellow wrestlers since I have no idea what I should do.

I would work your butt-off, lift, go to camps. wrestle FS/GR. Find good work out partners that beat the tar out of you.

As far as weight next year, I would wait and see where you are next fall. Don't try to keep your weight down, you may grow and fill out this summer. The main thing is to work hard and improve your skills (bow staff skills for one are very helpful), and worry about the weight issue next fall.

(THIS IS NOT AN ENDORSEMENT TO DRINK POP AND EAT DONUTS UNTIL WRESTLING SEASON NEXT YEAR PREPARATION INVOLVES PROPER NUTRITION)

Thanks coachtwink. It's sad. Ever since my first weigh-in I've been able to make weight with all my clothes on. And I've actually kept my wrestling diet ( not that much soda/junk food)The more I think about it, the more I think that you are right. I shouldn't worry about it. But, My question is that, I'm thinking about finding a club to wrestle in this summer, so what should I do for that? If I'm going to be lifting weights , and since muscle weighs more than fat, shouldn't I just go up to 160?

(Replies are still welcome ^^)

Again, don't even worry about the weight. If I were you I would wrestle what ever weight you are closest to for the summer since you aren't worrying about qualifying for cadets. If you happen to gain weight over the summer, just wrestle the next weight class up at the next tourney you go to. Since summer wrestling is much more laid back, and clubs can enter more than one person/weight class, it really is not that big of a deal if you change wieghts.

:p I wish I could find a decent partner. All the guys on my team, literally hate me. I'll probably have to find a work-out partner thru the club. It's sad. Right now,( I just went into the wrestling room at my school, since I'm at the @#%$ing place >>) I am currently weighing 152.0 . It's scary that I'm STILL at that. So I'll probably wrestle that this summer...I'm trying to decide if I should try and see if my mother will let me go to a couple of missouri wrestling camps. ( My mother supports me My step-dad hates the fact that I am. He thinks it's "innapropriate" for girls to wrestle guys..)

You may or may not have a growth spurt...I would just have fun and go to these camps to improve your strength, speed, and skill then worry about weight later.

Just stay focused. You sound like you have a great attitude. If possible, you should check out the girls team that practices at Wichita NW. Coach Ed does a great job. There will be partners there. Krisha Childres works out with them, and I believe she just beat the number 1 girl in the nation at her weight.

Most of all, remember that good things happen to people that work hard and do the right things.

Good luck,
Coach Jilka

Thanks Sweazy, but at the rate I'm going I'm definetly probably will have a growth spurt.>> That's what you get for having a 7'1 father. And Thanks Coach Jilka. During the season, I've seen her wrestle. And She's good. She'd put up a good fight up against Danny Dawson who I think wrestles 135 for us on varsity.I know she's good. I saw her at the Valley Center tournament and Wow.... I was astounded. This is only my first year wrestling, so there might be a chance I can get really really good. And I think I've seen you before Coach.. Didn't you talk to Coach Keiswetter at the VC tourney?

Most importantly, just practice FS and Greco like they've been saying. After that, lift and get in good cardio shape but do not worry in the least about your weight. I started wrestling my freshman year and was 4-26 on fifth string, getting all the way down to 150 for kids that year. By the next wrestling season I was 189 and after a slow start ended up qualifying for state, albeit with a losing record, by beating a couple of solid kids.

Basically, weight is the least of your problems, you just need A LOT of mat time.

Hi,
This is Coach Ed's wife and interestingly enough, Coach Ed just called your HS coach tonight to see how to get ahold of you. We are practing at NWHS on Tues and Thurs nights form 6-8pm and we have girls and guys, your size.
We are taking a team to Fargo and wondered if you would be interested. We hope to get Krisha as well. Coach Jilka is working on her for us.
We already have a dedicated set of girls but need more, expecially in the heavier weights. We also practice on Sundays. We used to have a Wellington wrestler FS/GR with us until he got too old. Mark Durant. His family knows us very well, so check us out. Also, Darin from Sunflower Wrestling and the kids coaches know us too. You can email or call anytime. 316-721-5122 ot kansaskrusaders@yahoo.com

Let us know,

Ms. Jenni

Thanks Ms. Jenni. I'm DEFINATELY intrested in that. But, I unfortunately had a MRI on the 29th. The radiologist said I had a torn meniscus and a torn ACL. I went to the sports medicine doctor up in wichita Monday and he said I didn't have a torn ACL and I MIGHT have a small tear on my meniscus. My mom is getting a third party to read the MRI films. She said that If the third party says that I don't have a torn ACL or a torn meniscus, I can still wrestle. but I'm Praying that I can still wrestle this summer... So Wish me luck... I'm going to need all of it I can get. >>

Good Luck Girl--Let us know. We are having a tourney this weekend in Wichita at Northwest HS at 13th and Tyler. If you can come let me know. Even if you can't wrestle, try to come and meet all the girls. Most of our Fargo Girls are coming to wrestle Saturday and some other younger girls too. Hope your knee is ok but if not I can find you a cool job to do that day. Call or email anytime. 316-721-5122. kansaskrusaders@yahoo.com

Excuse me for saying this AD , but There's no way in HELL I'd take steroids... No Way.... I mean , I would indeed get stronger but I think some of the wrestlers will under stand me on this one. YOU didn't get better On your own by working your butt off .You took the easy way out. And, there's no way I'm taking the easy way out.

Thanks Maniac.. I mean, I'd rather work my butt off and get stronger than take steroids. Yeah, they'd make me stronger ,but along with strength from steroids, comes medical problems. And I'm allready down, but not out with a knee injury.... And Plus, It just isn't right to take steroids to me.

No, sorry. I don't care if all of the cool kids are doing it. The cool kids who do steroids are just well.... Let's just say I have a few choice names for those idiots. I won't take steroids, not even if you paid me to.
