Carroll closes in on City League title

The Bishop Carroll wrestling team cleared the second of three hurdles between them and their fifth straight City League championship Thursday, defeating Northwest at home 48-23.

The win -- Carroll's 70th consecutive dual victory -- leaves only next week's dual against Kapaun between the Eagles and another City League championship.

"That one is important because it's not only for the City League title, but it's Kapaun." Carroll coach Jamie Finkeldei said. "It's a natural born rivalry."

Kapaun's only loss this year came to South, which Carroll defeated last week.

The Grizzlies came out strong, as Dante Rogers pinned standout sophomore John Keller 1 minute, 35 seconds into the second period.

" (Keller) was wrestling real tough, and he just got caught in an unconventional move," Finkeldei said.

Keller's twin brother, Jordan, won the 112 match 16-1, starting a string of six consecutive victories for the Eagles. After a Northwest victory at 145, Carroll's David Loos won at 152. Then at 160, junior Thomas Ronck defeated Jeff Poe 13-0 to give the Eagles a 39-12 lead, clinching the dual.

Ben Meyer, who pinned Christian Durlaneu at 171, was one of three Carroll seniors competing in his last home dual.

"We knew they were going to be good because they tied with South," Meyer said.

Northwest coach Eric Prichard was happy with his team's effort.

"The kids I expected to win won, and we competed when I thought we could compete," Prichard said. "There isn't a team in the city that could beat them. We'll be fine for our 6A stuff."
