Scott City - Guy Miller probably didn't look like a future Division I football player when he came to Scott City as a freshman.
``He was a little slow,'' Beavers coach Bill Arnold said. ``But as a sophomore, I saw his work ethic, and I knew he was going to be good.''
Miller improved throughout his high school career so much that he earned a scholarship to Colorado State. The senior signed a letter of intent with the Rams on Wednesday.
``I like it out there (at Colorado State),'' said Miller, who also received offers from the Air Force Academy as well as several Division II colleges. ``I like the coaches. I like the town. I like the campus. It just seems like a good fit.''
Miller, a 6-3, 275-pound offensive and defensive lineman, was rated the 10th best senior prospect in Kansas by Rivals.com.
Miller was a starter at Scott City for three years. Despite dislocating his left shoulder twice and having to miss a few games this past season, he battled through the injuries and anchored the Beavers' lines when he was on the field, helping them finish with a 7-2 record.
``He's gotten very quick and powerful off the line of scrimmage,'' said Arnold, who had not coached a D-I football signee in his 15-year career before Miller. ``When he locks on to someone, he's going to drive them. His footwork as improved over the years. He's a big, aggressive farm boy who likes to play.''
Miller eventually had shoulder surgery, which has prevented him from wrestling - a sport he won the Class 4A state heavyweight championship in last year - this winter.
Miller said he's recovering well, and he's looking forward to playing college football.
``It's a thing I've always wanted to do, and I'm happy to get this opportunity,'' he said.
