I used to love going to the St. Mary's tournament when I was in highschool...it was a pretty rugged 2 day competition that saw many great wrestlers compete in it, but I looked and looked and it appears that it isn't going to happen this year? I know last year it was supposed to but a blizzard messed up things and caused Silver Lake to go to Basehor (which they did very well in), but did I just overlook it?

I guess the new incarnation of the St. Mary's tourney is the Wabaunsee Tournament. Now, my facts are hazy (this all happened before I started coaching at Washburn Rural), but I think that the switch in tournament sites came back when St. Mary's and Rossville were going to consolidate high schools. Since the consolidation fell through, they've been alternating locations each year. Two years ago, it was at Wabaunsee, last year it was scheduled to be at St. Mary's (cancelled due to inclement weather), and this year it's at Wabaunsee again.
It seems that every year, that weekend is bad luck for snow storms... one year when I was in school, it was pretty slick out and snow was everywhere. On the bus trip back home Friday night, we came across a Nursing Home van that had slid into the ditch just the other side of Rossville; luckily, there was just the driver and no one was hurt. The Rural team got down in the ditch and we helped get the van unstuck. Go figure, the junior blues were heroes.
That always was a great tournament - I love going to a tough tournament and seeing schools that we don't usually compete against. People who don't know wrestling comment as to why a 6A school is going to a tournament packed with 3A and 4A schools, and hell, wrestling's like that. The small schools have kids who are just as tough (yeah, yeah, sometimes tougher...) as the kids from the big schools. Tough competition from schools like Rossville, Silver Lake, Atwood, Chapman (I know, not there anymore), Wamego, and so on. It's not a grinder like Derby, Basehor, or Newton, but still, the placers at this tournament are legit.

I remember when Wasburn, SFT, Silver Lake, Chapman, Holton, Hiawatha, Sabetha and a few other teams came and made it ultra tough. Is it still a 2 day tournament?
