The Women's Wrestling Initiative
Bill Scherr was the US Women's World team coach in 2005, and 2006. He is currently the assistant wrestling coach at Northwestern University. He is also a former NCAA Champion, a World Champ, and a bronze medalist in the Olympics.
Thanks to the generous support of Arno Niemand, Chairman and CEO of Body Bar Systems, who is the current sponsor for the women's team. They have also sponsored the USA Wrestling Body Bar, Women's National Championships (age group nationals for women). They have also developed a promotional DVD on women's wrestling, and they sponsor a number of the women wrestlers.
The Women's Wrestling Initiative:
Over 6,500 young women now wrestle in high school, which has grown every year at this level since 1990.
Women's wrestling was included as an Olympic sport in 2004.
There are currently 5 intercollegiate varsity programs and a dozen club programs in the US.
Three states now have an official state high school girls championships (CA, HI, TX), California has two sectional tournaments.
The trend is to have all girls teams in states.
The Growth of women's wrestling offers new opportunities for coaches at college, high school, and youth levels.
The US is a world power in women's wrestling, they placed 2nd at the 2004 Olympics.
