I am opening this topic to serve as an exchange of information about the 6&U event we have planned for March 21st, 2008. There are other topics on this forum where the pros and cons can be discussed and/or debated. I ask that this topic be used for its intended purpose. We are planning for a great event and would like to best serve the needs of the participants, coaches, and spectators. If you have any positive suggestions on how we can better reach this very important objective please let us know.

If you would prefer to send me a private message, the event email address is under_six_kstoc@yahoo.com. Or, I can be reached at the contact number and address below. Thank you for your support.

How is the tournament in Topeka going to be handled? Do the kids have to qualify at Ottawa in order to wrestle at Topeka?

Thanks in advance,

Thank you for your interest. I will answer your questions in reverse order.

The Topeka 6 and Under State: Kansas Tournament of Champions and the Ottawa Kansas 6 & Under State Championship are two independent events. An offer was extended to the Ottawa Mat Masters to combine these events into a single finale tournament, but they declined. We respect their wishes to continue with the event hosted in Ottawa, KS. However, I feel that our concept for an event wrestled in the Kansas Expocentre warrants our proceeding as planned. It is important to note that these events will be held on different days…at least in 2008. If desired, wrestlers can choose to wrestle in both events and the free market process will take care of the rest.

In Topeka, we plan to run a Super-32 bracket. As of now, it will be “open” registration. However, I have asked the 8 Sub-District locations to run a 6 & under qualifier in conjunction with their qualifying tournaments on 3/15. From these tournaments we would advance the top 4 to the Kansas Expocentre…filling out the 32 man bracket. I have received commitments from two of the eight sub-district locations thus far. My preference would be to advance qualifiers “only”. But at this point, my gut tells me that the best scenario will be to advance the qualifiers into the seeded positions and accept at large registration on a first come first serve basis to fill the bracket for this first year. Maybe if a few of you approach your sub-district host sites and encourage them to offer the 6 & under qualifier we can minimize the need for at-large registrants.

We will have 10 full sized mats on the arena floor. Depending on the number of entries we may elect to split one or more mats to facilitate completing in a one day format. Plaques will be awarded to the top eight wrestlers in each bracket. The championship round will be ran on four mats in a Grand format.

I will continue to answer the questions that any of you have. As always, your comments and suggestions on how to make this event the best it can be are appreciated. Keep the ideas flowing; we are listening…

Since the tourny is being held on the Friday before Districts. What about weigh-ins for the 6u kids wrestling in Districts? Are they going to be allowed to make weight for their district tourny at Topeka?
Without the 6u kids in some weights there will not be enough kids to fill brackets in 8u.

I hope you don't mean we have 6U kids pulling weight and making it two days in a row would be too difficult?

I think Scott is referring to the logistics of wrestling all day Friday in Topeka, getting back to the Wichita area late, then getting up very early to go weigh in for Districts, and then wrestling all day again. I think his question is to let the 6U weigh-in qualify as the District weigh-in to overcome the obstacles I listed.

Hey I've got an idea to make this event great. Get our state board to do the right thing and add a 6u state with the other ages

Well you're just a special kind of stupid aren't you?

If you were aware that most District weigh-ins would be taking place on that Friday, I was asking if Topeka weigh-in(the day before the districts) would count for the district. Everytime someone asks about weigh-ins somebody gets on here and assumes the kid is cutting weight. Even kids gain a pound or two when they eat. It takes a day or two for them to "naturally" lose that sometimes. I was just asking the tourny director about this tourny since Ottawa allowed weigh-in from previous day for their 6-u state tourny.

The State Board isn't the State Body. The State Body has voted this down everytime the question has been raised!!

Are you making a POSITIVE difference in the life of kids?

I think that is because some of us see too many kids at all ages cutting weight.

So, wouldn't a kid be gaining the same "pound or two" every day? How do you lose it naturally? Run it off? Sauna or plastics? I think it best to stick to what one of the previous posters said and make it about time constraints for making weigh-in.

Losing weight naturally is through working out at practice. Sauna suites have been illegal(funny you bing that up). So it is safe to say your wrestlers that you coach all wrestle the weight the weigh all the time? No wrestler in your club loses any weight since your against it? Yes my boys wrestle and they lose weight naturally through the week(about 1#-1.5#). They never miss a meal or have there ever been over weight at a weigh-in. It is funny that when someone brings up weigh-in, poeple like yourself always assume we are making kids drop 5 lbs. Through proper diet and portion control kids can eat numerous times in a day and lose a 1-2 lbs a week "naturally".
I was just asking about the weigh-ins and if they were going to be good for the next day, so sportsfan02 if you can answer that question please do so, if not do worry about everybody and making weight.
