As we see how much money is gerated from football and basketball then why should schools care about any other sports?

I think this is the way some schools are looking at their athletic programs. This is causing a huge disparity from the "haves" and "have nots" in college athletics. The term mid-majors keeps schools out of major bowl games. Baseball and wrestling teams barely have enough scolorships to fill a team compared to Football and Basketball who have enough to offer something to almost every athlete. College sports comes down to dollars and not competition and tradition.

I am so glad that Self stayed with KU. Well...in a sense....as I can't stand KU...but it is nice that he did not chase the check book of Ole' T. Boone. I know that he did not give up a ton, as his new contract is worth more than all of us on this board put together, but he did stay loyal to a program.

The thing that ticks me off about this...and a big reason I am posting this...is we, and I mean Oklahoma State, was prepared to write a check to a man for $6,000,000 for winning 1 national title. Big stinking deal.....win 5 and then come talk to me about a check. I don't care what sport you compete in...at the division 1 level it is a big deal to win that many titles.

I guess what I am saying is don't get your hopes up about a wrestling program anytime soon at KU. It is a business decision and the return does not justify the investment. I hate that fact and it burns me to the core, but it is the truth.

You are correct there is a huge disparity between the haves and have nots in college athletics. It seems like most college athletic departments would throw all their money into the development of men's college football and basketball programs if they were completely free to do so. There are not too many Ohio State University athletic programs out there. We have to be thankful for Missouri, Iowa State, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State in the Big 12 and of course for Fort Hays State and Newman in Kansas. Due to this trend in college athletics for the athletic departments to invest primarily in their two money makers, the most likely way to start programs may be thru a legislative action in the future. I would like to think and hope that a school like KU with all the resources would share the excess with wrestling but it is unlikely to happen unless they are made to do it thru legislation or some NCAA requirement. We do have a lot of youth wrestlers at the grade school and high school level in Kansas who are not getting a fair opportunity to further their wrestling careers at the highest level at their state universities in Kansas. I think there is justification for legislation to correct the situation.

Look at the success of schools that share the wealth with other sports compared to KU and K State. Nebraska, Oklahoma State, OU, Texas, and MU. These schools for the most part are competitive in most sports, Football, Basketball, Baseball, Wrestling and so on. K-State is alright in Football, and until this year KU was only known for Basketball. They are good for the most part in only one sport, the rest of the big dogs are competitive in all sports. Kansas apparently is ok with getting by.
