I am not sure about signing this contract I got today it kinda put me at a disadvantage. If I do sign the contract then I am bound by the contract to be there for $120, however if I sign and dont show up its a $120 fine, thats fine by me. However, it also says contract is valid only if the tournament is held on the date specified to me as an official this puts me at a disadvantage, because say the tourney gets moved or something then I scheduled my day to get paid $120 and they cancel the tourney then I am out my day and out the money because of the fact that I cant get another tournament to fill that spot.

I know we do it for the love of the sport, but I also know as a college student that I need the money to pay and keep some money back for college and incase of an emergancy. I just want to hear others opinions because I think it puts me as an official at the disadvantage.

I believe the whole contract thing has come to this because a few officials, in the past, would commit to doing a tourney and then not show up or call a day or two before the event and cancel because someone else called later and offered them more money. That left tournament officials scrambling to find some one. They had a few hundred kids there and not enough refs to do the job right. I agree that it gives a slight advantage to the tournament people, but that was caused by some of your fellow referees. If I have the wrong take on this subject and how it came about, please someone correct me! Anyway, if you aren't going to sign and return the contract, please let me know ASAP. But if you do, I will assure you that you will get your money. I was a college student once too! To tell the truth, I don't like the contract, but understand why it has become necessary. Thanks

I know why it came about and I am going to sign it dont worry, I was just planning on giving it to you at the Ottawa Tourney this weekend if you are going to be there.
I just saw that paragraph in the contract and right away knew that its not good business if you may get backed out on. I had no problem with the contract I just think that paragraph should have been left out as an official.

You're probably right, but this is what USAWKS has posted on their web sight and suggest we use. See you Saturday!

Actually, the section of the contract you're referring to, "Contract is valid only if the tournament is held on the date specified," was designed to protect the official. In the event that the tournament date is changed, we didn't feel that it was right that the official was obligated to the new date.

The next section of the contract, dealing with the financial penalty, applies equally to the club and the officials. Failure of either party to fulfill their obligation, unless through an unavoidable emergency, would trigger this provision.

The Kids Executive Council recognized an ongoing problem with no-shows, and requested that a standard contract be made available for clubs to use. The present form was developed to provide a generic form that clubs could use. Although the use of a contract is recommended, you do not have to use this form, and are free to modify it at will. If you have suggestions on ways to improve the form, please send them to me and we'll try to get them incorporated into a new format for next year.

I agree with your comment about the official not having to be there, but the way I read it I saw that it looked like the club wouldnt have to pay. I dont know of a better way to put it right away I will think about that though and see if I can come up with something.
