King College announces new women’s wrestling program for fall 2009

King College
02/23/2009

King College is pleased to announce that we will be offering a scholarship-based women’s wrestling program as part of our athletics department beginning fall 2009. Jason Moorman, King College’s Men’s Wrestling Assistant Coach, has agreed to step up to the new role of Head Coach. This program will be a part of the Women’s College Wrestling Association (WCWA).

King College is located in Bristol, Tenn.

Having only been in existence since 1993, women’s collegiate wrestling saw over 5,000 women athletes compete last year alone. Women’s wrestling, governed by USA Wrestling, made its Olympic debut at the Athens 2004 Summer Olympic Games. King will join the nine U.S. collegiate programs to offer athletic scholarships to women in the sport of wrestling.

For the 19th consecutive year, King has been recognized as a ‘Best College’ by U.S. News & World Report. King was named a ‘Best Baccalaureate College’ and ranked 11th in the South, nine slots ahead of last year’s report. King received additional recognition in the surveys ‘Great Schools, Great Prices’ subcategory, named 7th in the South, three slots above last year’s rankings. King has also been named one of the ‘Best Schools in the Southeast’ for a second consecutive year by The Princeton Review.

“Women’s wrestling will complement our existing athletics program,” states Jason Moorman. “We are pleased to offer a women’s program with the benefit of athletic scholarships. These financial offers, combined with King’s exceptional need and merit based financial aid offerings will make the College an excellent and highly affordable choice for women wrestlers who want to compete at the college level. The sport has gained a good deal of recognition with entry into the Olympic arena.”

In addition to women’s wrestling, King is also adding men’s and women’s cycling to its list of programs beginning fall 2009. King currently offers the following athletic programs: men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, tennis, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, track and field, men’s baseball, women’s softball, men’s wrestling, men’s and women’s cross country, and cheer and dance.

King is currently seeking membership as a NCAA Division II school. According to Rob Littleton, vice president for student affairs, “King is in its second of a three-year exploratory membership process with NCAA Division II. We hope to be granted provisional status in fall 2009.”

To learn more, contact the Jason Moorman with the King College athletics department at 423.652.6342 or jdmoorman@king.edu.
