Michael Sprigg in the Semi-Finals of the NY Collegiate State Championships in
SUNY Oswego. The Army varsity team has 8 or 9 guys in the semi's. They have received over 100 inches of snow so far this year and expect 12-24 inches while we are here. A winter wonder land on Lake Ontario. The Army team also had a few champs & other placers in the "B" Bracket Tournament. Connor went 3-1 and took 3rd. The B tournament finished today. The "A" tournament finishes up Saturday with the Semi's in the morning at 10:00 am.

Pioneers Battle But Fall 27-13 to Army

Jan. 23, 2009
Fairfield, CT-The Sacred Heart wrestling team fell to the Army Black Knights 27-13 Friday night in Fairfield, CT. The Pioneers got wins from Brandon Lapp (Castleton, NY), William Beiermeister (Boonton, NJ), Cory Dunn (Rutherford, NJ), and Austin Alpaugh (Lafeyette, NJ). The loss is the Pioneers fifth consecutive and drops Sacred Heart to 5-7 for the season.
After the Pioneers forfeited at 174 pounds to start the match Lapp earned three points for the Pioneers with a 7-3 decision at 184. Lapp earned a takedown working from the bottom in the third period to seal the match for Sacred Heart.
The Black Knights extended their lead as Richard Starks earned a major decision over Ricky Eichenlaub (Woodcliffe Lake, NJ). Beiermeister (Boonton, NJ) then won an exciting 5-3 double overtime match to bring the score to 10-6 in favor of Army. Beiermeister was up in riding time late in the final period forcing his opponent, Michael Sprigg, to frantically look for a takedown. The Sacred Heart senior heavyweight turned Sprigg's aggression against him and earned two points of his own for the victory.
Sacred Heart was again forced to forfeit six points at 125 pounds. Dunn won his match at 133 lbs decisively and used riding time to earn an 8-0 major decision over Army's Connor McCarthy. Chris Davis (Mohawk, NY) attempted to battle back late but fell short in a 20-9 loss to Casey Thome. Anthony Priore's (Garwood, NJ) recent winning streak came to an end with a 9-1 loss to Matthew Kyler.

:00 - Army 20, Harvard 3 (4 bouts remaining)

VOLKMANN'S VIEW (Army vs. Harvard)
Alright, we are back underway with our day's second match ... gonna have a long way to go to be as exciting as the last one ... back-and-forth start to the match so far ... Vetter is doing his best Silence of the Lambs impression with a black Hannibal Lector looking mask on ... pretty intimidating if you ask me ... next up - Starks ... Starks takes over midway through the second and keeps piling on the points ... another one of our really tough guys who is fun to watch work ... bring on the heavyweights ... I always think it is interesting watching the heavyweights go at it and then immediately watch a bout between to guys that way 125 pouns. Quite a contrast ...

Probable Lineups/Results:

165 - Mike Gorman (A) dec. Mike Sandler, 7-4
Sandler gets a takedown with 1:27 left in the first to lead 2-0 ... Gorman gets away for a point :20 late to make it 2-1 ... Sandler starts the second period down ... Sandler starts the period by almost sticking Gorman on his back ... Sandler does get away to make the score 3-1 ... end of the second period ... Gorman starts the third period down and gets a two-point reversal to tie the score... Sandler escapes to lead, 4-3 ... Gorman finishes with a takedown and a two-point near-fall with :10 remaining to earn the 7-4 decision.

174 - Bryan Panzano (H) dec. Dean Gaier, 7-2
Panzano starts with a takedown at the 2:00 mark ... Gaier gets away quickly to make it a 2-1 bout ... end of the first period ... Panzano starts the second down and quickly gets away ... Panzano gets a takedown with :40 on the clock to lead 5-1 after two periods ... Gaier starts the third down and gets away for a 5-2 score ... Panzano takes Gaier down one more time with :13 left for the 7-2 decision.

184 - Jake Vetter (A) dec. Pat Ziemnik, 6-3
Vetter gets a takedown with 1:55 remaining ... Ziemnik gets away with 1:08 to make it a 2-1 score ... end of the second ... Vetter starts the third down and quickly gets away for a 3-1 lead ... Vetter picks Ziemnik up and throws him down for another takedown with :20 seconds ont he clock for a 5-1 lead after two periods ... Ziemnik starts the third down ... Ziemnik gets a two point reversal with 1:00 to go, but Vetter escapes to make the score, 6-3 ... 6-3 decision for Vetter.

197 - #18 Richard Starks (A) tech. Sean Murphy, 21-5 (6:30)
Starks takes Murphy down :12 seconds in to lead 2-0 ... Murphy escapes, but Starks gets another takedown with :50 seconds remaining to lead 4-1 ... 4-1 Starks lead after first period ... Murphy starts the second down ... Starks lets Murphy up and takes him down twice to take an 8-4 lead ... another Starks takedown makes it 10-4 ... three-point near fall with :12 seconds to go make it 13-4, Starks, after two periods ... neutral start to the third ... Starks gets another takedown to make it 15-4 ... another takedown and a three-point near fall give Starks the tech fall ... 21-5 final score.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Army junior Matt Kyler improved to 35-4 this season, including a 17-0 dual record, but it was No. 7 Lehigh holding down the Black Knights, 27-12, Saturday afternoon in Bethlehem, Pa.

Kyler, who entered the week ranked the 10th-ranked 149-pounder in the country, earned a 3-1 decision over 14th-ranked Trevor Chinn. Tied at one late in the third period, Kyler scored a takedown at the edge of the mat in the final 10 seconds to earn his 21st-straight win of the season.

Army led 6-0 following the day’s first bout as junior Lance Penhale was awarded an injury default after Lehigh’s John McDonald suffered a knee injury and couldn’t continue. The Mountain Hawks bounced back with consecutive victories as Matt Fisk pinned freshman Connor McCarthy (4:59) at 133 and Seth Ciasulli earned a 4-2 decision over sophomore Casey Thome at 141 to put Lehigh ahead, 9-6.

Kyler’s decision tied the match, but Lehigh would take five of the final six bouts to seal the victory. Junior Richard Starks, ranked 20th at 197, won in a tiebreaker, 4-1, over Joe Kennedy to improve to 29-6 this winter with a 14-3 dual mark for the Black Knights’ only other victory.

Lehigh improved to 22-1 in dual competition this season, while the Black Knights fell to 10-5-2.

Army returns to action with its final home meet of the season next Saturday (Feb. 28) as arch rival Navy pays a visit to Christl Arena in the annual Star Match slated to start at 4:00 p.m.

Junior Matt Kyler

View Complete Blog From Friday Night's Match

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army junior 149-pounder Matt Kyler improved his record to 34-4 this winter with his 20th-straight victory to lead the Black Knights in a 15-15 tie with visiting East Stroudsburg, Friday night, at Gillis Field House.

Neither team earned any bonus point victories and spilt 10-straight decisions as Army (10-4-2, 4-1-1 EIWA) also received victories from junior Lance Penhale (125), sophomore Casey Thome (141), sophomore Rudy Chelednik (157) and junior Richard Starks (197).

“We did a good job tonight of not giving up any bonus points, but we also didn’t put any on the board and that obviously was the difference,” said Army head coach Chuck Barbee. “East Stroudsburg has a solid team and they really came ready to wrestle. I thought we wrestled hard, but we just didn’t put the points up in a couple of weight classes that we needed to.”

ESU’s Chris Birchler started the evening off with a 7-3 victory over Army junior heavyweight Michael Sprigg, before Penhale evened the match with a 6-1 win over David Luthy at 125.

Following a 8-1 Warrior decision by Matt Swallow over Connor McCarthy, Army forged a 12-6 lead with three-straight decisions by Thome over Matt Rizzo at 141, Kyler over Scott Keckman, 11-4, and Chelednik over Ken Monarque, 3-0.

ESU answered with three victories of its own to lead, 15-12, as Thad Frick bested freshman 165-pounder Michael Gorman, 10-3, Jeff Jacobs earned a 3-2 win over sophomore 174-pounder Jacob Vetter, and Ed Ebewo held off senior John Drew, 12-7, at 184.

Needing at least a decision to salvage a tie in the final match of the night, Starks out-pointed Shane Mallory, 6-5, help the Black Knights avoid defeat.

Undefeated in his last 14 outings, Thome’s record this season stands at 24-10, including a 12-4 ledger in dual meet competition. Ranked 20th in this week’s Intermat/NWCA/NWMA national poll, Starks improved his mark to 28-6 and 13-3, while Chelednik’s upped his season total 18-13, including an 8-5 dual record. Kyler is undefeated at 16-0 in dual meets this year.

Army hits the road on Saturday for a dual meet at Lehigh, which entered the week ranked seventh in the national team poll, scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. in Bethlehem, Pa. After that, the Black Knights will host Navy in the annual Star Match next Saturday, Feb. 21, at 4:00 p.m. in Christl Arena.

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Army senior Michael Sprigg and juniors Matt Kyler and Richard Starks each picked up victories for the Black Knights, but it was Navy taking the 26-9 victory on Saturday at Christl Arena in the annual Star Match.

Kyler, who entered the week ranked tenth nationally at 149 pounds, earned a slim 1-0 victory over seventh-ranked sophomore Bryce Saddoris to improve to 36-4 this season, including an undefeated 18-0 mark in dual meet competition. After three scoreless periods, and another minute of scoreless overtime, Kyler was able to keep Saddoris from escaping in the first 30-second tie-breaker period, before notching an escape of his own 12 seconds into the second tie-breaker and hold on for the decision. It was the second time Kyler had defeated Saddoris in the last two weeks after also notching a 4-2 decison on Feb. 7 at the Academy Wrestling Championships.

Starks, the 20th-ranked 197-pounder in the nation, came from behind to earn a 5-3 decision over Navy senior Phillip Neese. Trailing 3-1 early in the second period, Starks picked up an escape to pull within one point before tying the score with another to start the third period. He then knocked Neese to the mat for a takedown with 1:18 left in the match to seal the decision and improve to 30-6 this winter, including a 15-3 dual mark.

Sprigg took a 5-2 decision from Navy senior Tyler Moyer in the day's final bout. Tied 1-1 early in the third period, Sprigg notched a takedown with 1:19 on the clock to take a 3-1 lead. Neese escaped to pull within one at 3-2, but Sprigg earned another takedown as time expired to pick up the decision and improve to 28-11 this season.

Sprigg was one of seven Army wrestlers honored before the match in a Senior Day ceremony to recognize the members of the Class of 2009 on the squad. Sprigg joined senior captains Whitt Dunning and Williams Simpson, along with John Drew, Brock Epps, Davey Mason and Brian Rowan in making the final home appearances of their careers.

Army will have two weeks to prepare for the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships on Saturday and Sunday, March 7-8. The tournament will be hosted in Philadelphia at Penn.
