The flyer is not yet complete as I am working on satellite weigh-in locations and procedures. First and foremost - NO MISCONDUCT WILL BE TOLERATED. Registration and payment will be through Trackwrestling, and has not yet been set up. When set up it will be the wrestler (parent) and / or coach responsibility to verify accuracy of entries. Greco Wrestling will begin Saturday Morning at 08:30 A.M.(?) and Freestyle will begin approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the Greco session. What I am proposing is NO Saturday morning weigh-in for Greco. If participating in both styles, a wrestler will only weigh-in Friday night at their closest satellite weigh-in location or Circle High School in Towanda, Kansas. Freestyle weigh-in only Saturday morning from 11:00 A.M.(?) to 12:00 P.M.(?). The satellite weigh-in sites will be determined by each District Director and I will review for acceptance any and all offers to host a satellite weigh-in. Example is if Coach Lane in Fredonia wishes to host a satellite weigh-in or Coach Albright from Chanute will host the weigh-in I will approve these sites. I will expect the satellite weigh-in host to provide the wrestler names and weights Friday evening at the close of weigh-in to me by email. I will be proposing a weigh-in time Friday from 06:00 P.M. to 08:00 P.M. This is your tournament and I will attempt to provide as pleasant an experience as possible. In order to achieve my goal I will accept comments and suggestions at my email address. Remember, I am a NOVICE at managing a FREESTYLE Tournament and all suggestions are welcome and will be considered. RichardDSalyer@sbcglobel.net Telephone: H (316) 541-2764 C (316) 258-1019

You'll do just fine. Main problem I've seen is the delay in getting bout cards to the tables. Too many mats that don't have matches going on.
Thanks Doug

Any idea when pre-entries will be open, or the satellite entry locations. If a kid on only wrestling FS can he still satellite weigh?

If you mandate GR weigh-in on Friday it would be awesome to get a couple of rounds out of the way too. That would get us out of there on Saturday sooner.

Travis:
Tom Peterman is currently making arrangements for satellite locations. STA and Doniphan County have previously indicated their willingness to provide a site.
Labette County Community College (Andy Albright) will host a satellite weigh-in.
More to come!

If you are the only wrestler entered in your weight after remotely weighing in do you still have to drive to Towanda?

The remote weigh deal is a little weird. It is supposed to eliminate having to spend the night at the tournament location. If you weigh in at 7:30 pm I guess it lets you leave later to drive to the Wichita area. It does not accomodate allowing you to leave the next morning. If you are going to be in Towanda at 8am ready to wrestle you would have to get up REALLY early in the morning to make it from anywhere in any District other than 2 or 3. If you are wrestling freestyle only the remote weigh is not an option so you still have to be on-site Saturday morning. I am just trying to figure out the logic. Bottom line it really does NOT alleviate an overnight stay or help out Freestyle only wrestlers.

I think it might help encourage a few more entries if the tournament was started at a time that more reasonably allows wrestlers from other areas of the state to drive to the tournament location the day of the tournament and still be able to wrestle both greco and freestyle. I do like having the later freestyle only weigh-in time. You could reasonably drive up from the KC area to Towanda to make that weigh in Saturday if you just wanted to wrestle freestyle. I am not sure if it would be fair to allow night before satelitte weigh in for the freestyle only wrestlers. Would it be giving them an advantage over those wrestling both greco and freestyle if you allowed the freestyle only wrestlers to make their weight the night before which could be about 18 hours before they had to wrestle?

I don't know about all that but I do think that the "only FS/only Sat. weigh-in" might just cause some "FS only wrestlers" to decide just to not wrestle at all. Additionally, it's not like the GR wrestlers won't be eating during that said 18 hours. They will be eating too and will also have 18 hours before FS so they would have an advantage over FS only wrestlers if the FS only wrestlers have to weigh in Sat. The before mentioned scheme seems kind of crapish to me and definately unnecessary. Weigh in everybody Thursday just like the other tournaments and everyone will have the same opportunity to eat and be bigger. Why are we "punishing" FS only wrestlers? Why are we making this more difficult than it could be?

I agree with punishing freestyle only wrestlers. Waterboarding is what I would do to them.
Most excuses I hear from Freestyle only wrestlers, about not wrestling Greco, is "I am not any good at it". That is a lame excuse, do 'em both, take your lumps. You are not gonna be any good at it until you DO IT!!!

If you are the only wrestler entered in your weight after remotely weighing in do you still have to drive to Towanda? At this time this situation applys to far too many wrestlers. If they are paying $20 0r $40 to enter and not getting to wrestle why should we make them spend money to travel as well? Will someone please address this situaion?

Whether someone should do FS, GR or both and why they chose to decide that is a seperate issue which I am not concerned with right now.

I think for a state qualifier or national qualifier you can do block for exhibitions, but I also know they are reluctant to do it as they have been in the past. We have shown up in the past for Southern Plains and had no one to wrestle, and they wouldn't do exhibition. It was for placement and seeding though. But to agree with Michael, it makes it hardly worth it by the time you figure in all of the costs.
BTW, I think Will's question is a rather valid and appropriate question, I am sure he isn't the only one wanting to know that answer.

Kansas can take up to 45 wrestler in each style and age. Max of 4 per weight I believe. Regional qualifiers do not count against this total.
So I would think Top 4 qualify. In the past this is only an issue in the core center weights. If you are either really big or small there generally is not over 4 kids that sign up to go.

Here is what the state flyer says:
The top three Cadet and Junior finishers in each weight and style will qualify for their respective national teams for the tournament in Fargo, North Dakota, at that weight class. All wrestlers wishing to be a part of the Cadet / Junior National Duals Teams are expected to compete at the state tournament. The Cadet and Junior directors will give consideration to the top state finishers when selecting the National Dual Teams. Wrestlers that qualify for the national team to compete in Fargo will need to fill out paper work and pay a $50 non-refundable deposit to hold their place on the team. This is due the day of the State Tournament. Information on the Cadet and Junior Training Camp will be available at the State Tournament.

Registration has closed with 236 total participants. Down 23% from 2008. In 2007 we had around 220 wrestlers. In 2008 the tournament was in May and had 305 participants, 40% more than the prior year. I think it is safe to say, in spite of graduation, baseball, track, prom, etc. conflicts in May it is still a better date. The data supports it. I know that many wanted to have "more time for more tournaments." After Folkstyle state was complete the first club hosted FS/GR event was more than a month later. The last club hosted evented at STA only had around 125 wrestlers. There is time for more before a May date. Lets make a data supported decision and move the tournament back into May.

I agree with Will "the thrill" Cokeley on this opinion. Especially with the new football rules allowing them to have organized practices as soon as school ends ect. A lot of schools are doing camps ect. I personally took a shot as this week I had approximately 10 kids who would of competed this week-end at state who were unable to due to being in Tulsa for team camp. I think this is going to happen a lot more often.
If we do it the 1st or 2nd week of May we can avoid most Prom issues as well as graduation issues and the kids are still in some kind of shape from the folk-style season (Which i reserve another thread for my opinion on that).
I hope we can pull that off with some support for Kansas!

With the new summer contact rules for all sports (lesson is, be careful what you wish for), it has become VERY important for all of our high school coaches to have a good working relationships with their football staff to avoid conflicts wherever possible.
