Inidana Update:
Our Schoolboy team, while battered and bruised, has rebounded from the first two dual defeats to run off 5 dual wins in a row. Coach Knox challenged them to step it up and they have with great successl. Now we go against Florida for a medal!
We can't wait to wrestle our last Greco dual and start Freestyle. Go Team Kansas and good luck to the Cadets.

"Unsportsmanlike conduct on Kansas bench -1.000"
Good grief! Could be a number of things. A kid changing his singlet, etc. It's not "good grief" until you know the story.

Sport0, Have you ever attended a summer dual event? I didn't think so. Keep your comments to yourself until you have invested your time, hard work and money in one of these. The officials pool for the summer is plenty shallow to begin with so when you have two major dual events on the same weekend I am sure that the calls were more than a little hard to live with. If the officials worked as hard at being good as the kids do then it would be a better wrestling world.

Team Kansas will wrestle the third match in this pool against Indiana 1.

So I take it you are aware of what caused the team point to be deducted? From the tone of your post I take it you were not involved, which had been my greatest fear! If you don't mind, I think I will decide what I will or will not comment on, ok Will?

Will if I remember right too, a lot of the officials are donating time on many of these events. They may get a hotel or gas, but no or very little pay. That is another factor people should consider.

So low pay and benefits is an excuse for not knowing the rules? None of the coaches or wresters are being compensated yet they are prepared. If you are not passionate enough to get prepared why would you even show up? Three man mechanics leads to inattentive officiating and causes power struggles. If the three guys have not worked together before these events they may struggle. Many of these officials indulge in the social side of the event to the point they are not adequately rested and unable to perform satisfactorily. The worst part of these issues is that most of them are not willing to admit they made a mistake. Instead they make it personal and instead of improving they take the "I'll show you approach." Honestly, we need more wrestlers or former wrestlers to get involved in this aspect of the sport. Those who have never wrestled or who allow themselves to become unfit do not make great mat ariters.

I won't try to justify it, but here is the story: In our 112 lb match, Jerod had his guy on his back in a head and arm for a minute and 20 seconds, no fall called. In our 120 lb match, Levi had his guy on his back for at least the same amount of time.(one of the parents gave me the exact times but I can't recall) No fall called on either. A coach slammed his clipboard down and a piece of it broke off, hit a water bottle, and I believe the official thought something was thrown. Had the coach invested in a quality clipboard, we would have had no problem. Not a big deal, but we got hosed. Either one of those spatula requiring situations being called a fall would have given us the dual win. This kept us out of the championship bracket. If ifs and buts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a merry Christmas.
We brought 4 schoolboys (could have had 5) back from last years team and performed very well. We lost a one point dual, a two point dual, a three point dual, and a four point dual. Any of those duals could have been changed by the outcome of a single match, not getting pinned, injuries, etc. By my count, there should be 9 schoolboys returning for next year. Josiah Seaton, Reece Cokeley, Luke Henes, Dylan Eck, Zack Hensley, Isaac Dulgarian, Devin Moore, Jared Langley, and Kyle Huck. These boys competed, took their lumps, handed some lumps out, and got better. I have no doubt that the schoolboy team for next year has a chance to be very good once again. If you have a kid that was born in 1996 or 1997, start planning now to make yourself a part of next year's team. Most of the above mentioned kids are in the smaller weights, so we need some beef in addition to as many of the smaller kids as we can gather up.
Some of our kids wrestled all 16 rounds. Having alternates made it possible to get some rest for some of our kids. I believe that 6 matches is probably the least that anyone wrestled, barring injured kids. Mentally, this will probably be the toughest thing your kid will have done in this sport. Rest assured, every kid that went feels good about the experience, whether they got the wins or not.
Kansas was well represented. However, it is obvious that our technique is well behind the states that made the championship rounds. However, our toughness is at or above any of them. I'll leave it up to someone smarter than me to give some ideas on how to better prepare us technique wise, to compete with these states that start FS/Greco in March.

Some of refs were not great and some of the calls were "off". It was very frustrating because as well as the team did - they could have placed even higher if we hadn't been hindered by some truly bad calls. But, unfortunately, that happens in wrestling and probably always will.
I just want to say thank you to those that put forth the effort to put this together for the boys. Our son made a last minute decision to go and with less than a handful of freestyle/greco practices under his belt we were not sure what to expect. We spent the first day trying to figure out the scoring! Talk about confusion to a couple folkstylers!!
The coaches were great with the boys. The boys had an excellent time together. Although our son recongnized a lot of faces when he walked into Cokeley's barn - there were none he really knew. By the time they got to Indy, the whole group seemed to be great friends.
If you have a son/daughter that is even a little interested in extending their season and trying something new, I would definately recommend this experience.

To add onto what Mrs. Bradley is saying:
Here is a list of kids with limited or NO FS/GR experience, maybe a tourney or two at most, prior to Schoolboy duals. Josiah Seaton Luke Henes Tagen Lambotte Jake Bradley Jaylen Padilla Raymond Gallegos Aaron Rafalko Jarin "Downtown" Brown
Last year we had several similar situations of kids that performed well as "greenies".
Our kids were involved in several "war" type duals and matches. How cool it is to see someone from Team Kansas standing toe to toe with the best the country has to offer. Be it the little guys jitterbugging around, or the big boys bulling each other. But is there anything better than watching the big boys toss each other around. One of the highlights has to be Downtown Brown tossing about 300 lbs of Team Washington's heavyweight into one of their coaches on the sideline. The coach's statement was "when there is 600 lbs coming at you, there really isn't anywhere to go". He took a foot to the kidney, but was able to laugh about it afterward. Or Rafalko coming back from a deficit to pin a previously undefeated 210 lb stud. Seeing big Raymond Gallegos grow from somewhat withdrawn, to a head and arm machine. His first headlock pin was great to watch.
Another highlight is probably Kyle Huck. Undersized wrestling 175, and told that he can't get pinned against Minnesota to keep us in the match, decides that he will have none of that negative talk, and goes out and gets a first period tech fall of a very mature animal. Loses a close 2nd period, then is wrestling his heart out, going for the win, gets caught and a questionable fall is called after we felt time had expired. Talk about going from subdued, to elated, to deflated. All part of the learning experience. He'll make some noise next year, trust me.
How about drawing a very tough Indiana 1 team the first round of Freestyle, and losing our first 5 matches, down 18-2. Then the Kansas gauntlet of our 105 thru 136 reeled off 5 straight wins to take a 22-19 lead, then have 3 falls, and a tech fall in winning 4 of the last 7 to take the dual 39-33.
The intensity and drama is undescribable. I got home at 4:10 this morning, and am totally drained. I can only imagine how the boys doing the wrestling feel. My guess is they are tired but proud, sore but strong, and happy to be back in good ole Kansas.
I haven't taken the time to thank all the parents that came along and helped with room chaperone, cooking at camp, cleaning and stocking of the lunchroom, etc. Also a BIG thanks to Tom Williams for organizing all of this, without even having a dog in the fight. Coach Knox and Coach Flynn have a way of drawing it out of the kids. Also thanks to Josh Clark for going along to fulfill Kansas obligation to provide a referee, and for working with the boys on some things he saw that they needed to work on. Cokeley for allowing his barn to be used for the camp, and helping organize transportation.
Please do what you can to get your kid on this team next year. You won't regret it.

I felt this was a great year for the schoolboy team. I had an incredible time coaching and becoming friends with these great wrestlers. They were truly a bunch of brawlers and I couldn’t be happier with the way they preformed. Although we had our setbacks, our kids were quick to jump back up on their feet and get right back in the grind. I would also like to thank the coaches and parents who helped out this year. They really made it an experience for this team.

After a couple of days to get caught up and rest I want to thank all involved with this year's Schoolboy Duals team.
1. The wrestlers. Way to go Team Kansas. You are probably the best team we have ever taken, top to bottom, and it was all pleasure watching you guys work and improve. From the first dual to the last was a tremendous improvement, and with a little good fortune here or there you would have double medaled, and Kansas has never done that. Thanks for your effort and dedication.
2. Coaches. Coach Knox, as always, a great leader and steward of young men, if anyone wants to learn how to handle young men, both on and off the mat, just follow Charlie around. Coach Flynn, thanks for taking the time from your summer to help and assist our young wrestlers, you were great. Also, staying in the barn for two days in the heat was awesome. Coach Roberson, thanks for your excellent help in the camp. Coaches Henes, assistant Delich, thanks for helping out in the barn, you guys are special.
3. Drivers, chaperones. John Johnson, Dave Langley, Sharon Henes, Mark Dulgarian, Doug Eck, the Lambottes, and special mention to Ted Huck for tirelessly helping in the barn and to and from Indy, you guys should have seen the food prepared.
4. Food/cafeteria. Sharon, Jean Rafalko, Melissa Bland, and others stepped up and made this thankless job a breeze for us.
5. Parents/family/friends. To all who attended and supported us and to all back home who did what they could to help out you have my sincere thanks and appreciation. Many times we make tough decisions about who to wrestle and who to sit or have to move kids in our lineup to help the team, and we had no complaints whatsoever. We also were short on singlets and have to order and ship to some of our kids, and not a word has been spoken in that regard.
6. Josh Clark. Thanks for coming to Indy and helping with our referee responsibilities and for offering technical and moral support.
7. Will and Beth Cokeley. I cannot say how generous and hospitable you guys are for letting us stay and use your wrestling facility. It is unbelievable that you do this over and over for wrestling in our state.
8. Doug Eck. I could not have done this without Doug, who helped recruit, organize, chaperone and coach. You were great, brother.
If I left someone out, I apologize, but you know who you are and that I am grateful.
So, Team Kansas, you breathed great success, elation, disappointment and bitter defeat all in the same breath, but you kept your heads high and made us all proud. You are a great group of young men, and I cannot wait to watch you this next few years.
Tom Williams

I don't think it has been mentioned yet, but 112 lb Jared Johnson went undefeated in Greco AND Freestyle. I'd be curious to know whether any Kansas kid has accomplished that before at Schoolboy Duals.
He deserves a big hand for pulling it off.
