Wow, what an incredible tournament Mr. Tom Watson is having at the 2009 British Open. He is tied for the lead after the first two rounds at five under par. Tiger Woods, maybe the greatest golfer of all time, finished the second round 10 shots behind Watson at five over and he did not make the cut.

Tom Watson is 59 and will turn 60 in September. He has won the British Open five times in his career, including in 1977 at the same course when he had the famous Dual in the Sun tournament against Jack Nicklaus, who most from my generation believe to be the best golfer of all time. Watson and Nicklaus smoked the field in 1977 and matched scores until the last day when Watson beat Nicklaus on the very last hole.

Tom has always been a sports hero of mine. It has been a very long time since he has been in contention at a major regular PGA tour golf tournament. If he won this tournament, he would be the oldest person to have won a major golf tournament. I believe Julius Boros has the current distinction winning one at 48 years of age. The experts would say there is no way that Tom can finish the last two rounds at the same pace and win this tournament. But then again who would have ever predicted that he would be tied for first place after two rounds?

He has given his fans a lot of thrills over his career. This is something else. Go, Tom!

Watson is now ahead by one at four under par after the third round of the British Open. I think I heard them say that no one his age has EVER been in the lead at the end of the day in any round of a major golf tournament much less the third round. It is already historic what he has accomplished this week. Just think if he wins this tournament tomorrow. I mean he is really swinging the club well. He looks like a young man with his golf swing and he is ramming in some very long putts. This is really one of the most amazing things I have seen in sports. Unbelievable!

This is an off the charts accomplishment. If he pulls this off it will be Tom Watson Day in Kansas City! He has joined Sam Snead as the only two golfers to lead a major in FOUR different decades!

Cink made a very nice putt on the final hole and Watson missed one that he would normal drain to go to a 4 hole playoff where the wheels fell off. Still pretty impressive finish by a 59 year old.

Yes it was a incredible four days for Kansas native Tom Watson. He almost made golfing hisotry. He was leading by one stroke going into the last hole and he needed to par to win. He had a great drive and it looked like he hit the perfect 2nd shot into the green but he must of had too much adrenaline going. His ball hit on the green but he had too much gas on it and it rolled off the green too far. He did not hit a good third shot attempting to putt from off the green far from the hole and he left himself about a 10 foot putt for par and as Tim said he missed that one and really was not close on it. This put him into the four hole playoff with Stewart Cink. Tom ran out of gas and lost that playoff by a good margin.

I have been a fan of his since he was about 16 years old when he was tearing it up in Kansas City as an amateur and I was a caddie. I used to take days off from caddying to go watch him play in a local final as a youth. He was a golfing hero to most of the Kansas City caddies even aa a local amateur. I followed his entire professional career I enjoyed his reign as the No.1 player in golf from the mid-70s to the mid-80s. I have also enjoyed his successful Senior tour career. I never thought I would see him have another regular professional major golf tournament like this again. He has given all of his fans a lot of thrills. His fans myself included will always remember this very special tournament from a very special sports hero. Well done, Tom!
