Though we are in the midst of a big week of wrestling, thought I would take this time to mention a Kansan and something these young athletes can strive to accomplish someday!

BAKU, Azerbaijan - 2009 European champion Azerbaijan defeated the United States, 4-3, in a men’s freestyle dual meet on Saturday night.

Winning bouts for the United States were Shawn Bunch (Columbus, Ohio/Gator WC) at 60 kg/132 lbs., Bryce Hasseman (Iowa City, Iowa/New York AC) at 84 kg/185 lbs. and and Tervel Dlagnev (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.

A total of $29,000 in prize money was up for grabs. For winning, Azerbaijan won $22,000 and U.S. team received $7,000 for competing.

“For a World Team of all first time members, I thought we wrestled fairly well in many positions. Bunch and Dlagnev beat two of Azerbaijan’s European Champions, and we won three of the seven dual matches. However, a hard-to-swallow loss like this reveals many areas in which are guys can improve before the World Championships,” said Assitant National Freestyle Coach Brandon Slay.

Bunch defeated European champion Zelimhan Guseynov, two periods to one. Bunch scored single legs in the second and third periods to win.

Hasseman also needed three periods to beat Sharip Sharipov, two periods to one. Hasseman scored a single leg takedown to win in the third period.

Dlagnev won a tight match over European champion Ali Isayev, two periods to one. He won the first and third periods of the match.

Bunch and Dlagnev will be competing in their first Senior World Championships in Herning, Denmark in September.

The 2009 U.S. Freestyle World Team and additional national team members are in Azerbaijan for training, and will also compete in the Heydar Aliyev Golden Grand Prix tournament on Sunday, July 19 in Baku.

“Our coaching staff is extremely pleased to have had this opportunity to train with Azerbaijan for over a week, wrestle them in a dual tonight, and compete in the Grand Prix tournament tomorrow. Our training and competition is exactly what we needed to maximize our opportunity of winning medals in Denmark in September,” said Slay.
