ZACH ANDERSON, CLAY CENTER
189-pound senior wrestler
His performance: For the second straight year, Anderson won the 189-pound title at the Newton Tournament of Champions and for the second straight year, the Tiger senior pinned his finals foe. Already up 4-1 on Manhattan’s Ty Suggs in the second period, Anderson turned him with a hammerlock and pinned Suggs 57 seconds into the period to improve to 21-0 on the season with 17 of those wins by pin, including four at Newton.
Comment: “Getting second (at state) last year really gave him a goal this year of going undefeated and becoming a state champion,” Clay Center coach Brandon Pigorsch said. “He hasn’t let much get in his way of stopping that so far. We knew he was going to have some good matches this weekend, but he’s pretty determined right now.”
