The email I recieved from Coach Terrell said
"We just had our meeting today and I don’t have the specifics yet but we are running the bigger boys (both styles) on Saturday and the smaller boys (both styles on Sunday. I hope this helps."
Not the answer that I wanted but that is what he said.
Does anyone know who the committee is that made this decision and how they reached it? Who came up with the date and why is it in the middle of high school and college graduations? I know last year it went long but why do we have to go to a Saturday Sunday instead of a Friday night weigh-in with a couple of rounds of greco and finish Freestyle on Saturday. I think we are making it harder to wrestle Freestyle and Greco.

I think a saturday pm weigh in and some greco saturday night then freestyle all day sunday is a good idea, maybe some can then do both - graduate and freestyle - we would...but I think it is riculous not to have a schedule for what should be a big tournament for these kids already lined out... there is no "good" weekend in may to have anything that is a simple fact of education...of course in my opinion this all goes back to KSHSAA prohibiting the vast majority of potential coaches from having anything to do with freestyle/greco

why are the juniors wrestling on sunday this year???? dumb move . This was a bad weekend to have a state tournament with graduation. Why not have our tournament the same weekend as missouri that way it wont interfere with graduation.

I was told the juniors are wrestling on Sat. Please post the actual dates my son does graduate that weekend and I don't want to send out invites if he will be wrestling instead! Yes I'm allowing him to make that decision and he says he would rather wrestle if he has to choose.

I appreciate all that everyone does to put on a tournament and I know it takes time, and I am volunteering to help, but when can we expect details on the State Freestyle and Greco Tournament. I know it is at Rose Hill High School, I know Schoolboy and below are on May 14 and Cadet and Juniors are on May 15th but what time is weigh-in, are they doing remote weigh-in like in the past, are they using USA Wrestling Weight Classes for all age groups or are they doing something different for the younger kids? What does it cost to enter, when are entries due? Will it cost for spectator, are they having concessions can we bring food into the gym? In other words when are we going to get a flyer and contact information, not just a link to Trackwrestling to register?

I greatly appreciate the release of the flyer. Now a question, do you register by weight, or not?? And, if you do not make weight, can you just move up, and is there a cost?? Finally, why don't you release the wrestler list, USA Nationals does, what is the big deal????
Finally, I think the tournament was well ran last year, just too small of place for the number of kids. My complaint is information.

I will let you coaches decide! We have two possibilities, either try to squeeze 6 hours out during the State FS/GR tourney or hold a clinic on next Sunday, May 1st!
Doing it in Rosehill would require a real late evening perhaps on Saturday on May 14th and perhaps early May 15th. Attendees might be asked to miss a few matches of the tournament in order to make it work. (possible motel stay Saturday night in Rosehill)
If we held it May 1 we would eliminate the conflicts of the tournament. But May 1st is one of the scheduled weekends for Regional training centers! The clinic would probably be held in Ottawa, starting about 11 am!!
My preference is May 1st but we need to decide quickly!

Do you have to make weight, or do you just go up a weight?? I assume it will be like last year and you just go up.

With 55 hours left we have just 57 wrestlers. At what point do we throw in the towel? I don't want to spend $100 on fuel for none to two matches. This is crazy.

You guys should watch it on over-reacting. The Blue Chip tourney only have a few kids signed up until a day or 2 before the deadline. I would bet this one will fill up if everyone stops acting like it is a bust.
But on the other side, I did like Junction City - at the end of May. But we will still be there.

i am sure that some more kids will sign up, but I really think that this is an indicator that some things need to change in KS for Freestyle and Greco. I think that if high school coaches were allowed to actually coach freestyle and Greco during this time of the year you would see the numbers go up. High School coaches have great influence on many of these kids that are setting at home during the weekends. Scheduling and timing is another issue that might need to be addressed. A lot of kids are involved in a spring sport right now for their high school and will be until the end of may.

We never had near 300 when the tournament was after school was out. The two times we have had it earlier our numbers have been by far the greatest.
We need to work hard to insure that we have enough officials every year to have it on the same weekend as Missouri. Last weekend would have been much better than this weekend. This weekend there are many, many graduation conflicts. In fact, I believe Rose Hill's graduation is this Sunday. It might be a good thing that our numbers are low... Last year the tournament left a bad taste in many of our parents and supporters mouths. The tournament director vowed not to host it again. EVERY year the majority of participants are from Eastern 1/4 of the state but we continue to schedule away from there. I hope the corporate board learns to listen to the data and its constituents.

We need to get Kids Folkstyle overwith before High School State, and start Greco/Freestyle earlyer for everyone. Then have Greco/Freestyle state the end of April or the 1st of May.
I found this on USA wrestling Utah's web page. They start Freestyle and Greco the end of Febuary as soon as high school state ends, and Utah has LOT small Wrestling population then Kansas,
UTAH USA WRESTLING April 22, 2011
"This last weekend concluded our 2011 USA Wrestling Utah season with the Freestyle State Championships. We had 459 wrestlers competing which is a huge improvement in numbers from the previous year!"
459, that is way more then we have had the last 4 years I've been around.

I am not sure why we are listing weight classes as we are combining kids below the Schoolboy division. We should consider the Blue Chip Kids1 Kids2 split instead of the traditional age groups. It should be about mat time and experience, not winning at that age.

We need to stop complaining about where the tournament is and how many numbers there are signed up. The numbers will be there, in every tournament all summer numbers are down until the day before and then everyone signs up last minute. I know many people that will be doing this regardless of the worry that the numbers will be low. We need to ,as a state, make sure that the kids in our clubs and high schools are attending and not going else where. I know there are a number of kids thinking about going to Northern Plains instead of state. And in some cases I know that those boys should go there to get the better competition so they can get on track for becoming Fargo All-Americans. I know that there are multiple graduations going on and we can’t do anything about that other than have it another weekend. How many different weekends have we tried over the years and all we is get is complaining from one half of the state, we make it two days again and we hear complaining from the other half. We have it in Eastern Kansas and one half of the state is mad. If it is in the middle or west of the state then the eastern half is mad. Just do our job as coaches, parents and mentors and get our kids to compete and go win that state title. Come on Kansas, stop complaining and get kids there!!!

It should be about mat time and experience, not winning at that age. so midget, novice, interm. Maybe combined and Schoolboy, cadet, juniors run by age right. And you know if numbers are a issue we want more kids. Missouri's state tournament is open to out of state entries for anyone not schoolboy or above. Maybe we should consider that for next year

Bottom line - If you aren't scared to wrestle other top kids in the state and you want to get better. You show up and wrestle.

We have 270 total Greco wrestlers which is up 11!
We have 315 total for Freestlyle which is down 22.
Of course these numbers are subject to a slight change!

I was there yesterday to attend the USAW Corporate Board meeting as a guest. I got there around eleven with Sean McCarthy. I was very impressed with the Rose Hill High School facility for this event and on how well this event was ran. Great job to all involved.

2 Day Tournment
Pros - Better for the wrestlers, the fan experience, mat space, and finish time each day. Satelite weighins - great
Con's - Longer weekend for volunteers and organizers
Well done crew!

Aspen Kmiec skipped his HS Graduation today to Wrestle. Enjoyed the tournament today. Some great matches and very well ran. Thanks to all of the volunteers who contributed and kept the show running smoothly.

What is the criteria on tie breakers for FS/GR? At 285 there was a 3 way tie so I was curious as to how they made a 1st, 2nd, 3rd.... 3rd place pinned the 1st place??
