The 12th-ranked FHSU wrestling squad defeated New Mexico Highlands on Wednesday evening (Jan. 4) by a score of 40-12 in Las Vegas, N.M. The Tigers moved to 2-0 in dual action with the win and 1-0 in the RMAC. The Tigers return to the mat on Thursday night (Jan. 5) at CSU-Pueblo in another conference dual.
Fort Hays State cruised to the easy win, benefitting from the Cowboys being open at three weights. Fort Hays State was open at 149 pounds, so only six matches were wrestled in the dual.
FHSU received maximum points from Tanner Kriss and Justin Glenn at the heaviest weights. Kriss defeated Justin Rockhill by fall in 5:22 at 197 pounds, and Glenn defeated Robert Rockhill by fall in 2:43 at heavyweight. The result of those two matches, coupled with the three forfeits accounted for 30 of Fort Hays State's points in the dual.
Picking up decision wins for FHSU were Kyle Johnson at 133 pounds, and Derek Koehn at 157 pounds. Johnson defeated Edward Zuckerman 9-6 and Koehn defeated Travis Saxon 5-3. Sam Thoman picked up a major decision at 165 pounds over Chris Apodaca by a score of 10-2.
The only loss for FHSU in matches wrestled was at 174 pounds as Benny Armstrong lost by fall.
Fort Hays State faces a 1-0 CSU-Pueblo team on Thursday evening. The Thunderwolves will be wrestling their first RMAC dual of the season.
