CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - A pair of timely pins gave the Arizona State University team the boost it needed to knock off the North Carolina Tar Heels on Friday Night in Chapel Hill, N.C.

It was a back-and-forth affair in Carmichael Arena, but the Sun Devils came out on top by a final score of 21-16 to improve to 1-0 to start the season.

Shane McGough got things going for the Sun Devils at 133 pounds in a high scoring affair to open the 2012-13 season against Joey Ward, but came up just shy in a 15-10 decision.

At 141 pounds, freshman Matt Kraus made his Sun Devil debut against No. 19 Evan Henderson and dropped a 13-4 major decision as the Tar Heels jumped out to a 7-0 lead.

UNC's John Staudenmayer then took down Parker Madl in a 6-2 decision to give UNC the 10-6 lead at the midway point.

But just like that, the Sun Devils were back in it with the first fall of the night as Blake Stauffer pinned Frank Abbondanza with just 14 seconds left in his first career match in the Maroon and Gold to give ASU a 12-10 advantage through six bouts.

The Tar Heels bounced back with a win at 184 pounds as Alex Utley posted a decision over Kevin Radford, 6-4 to make it 13-12 in favor of UNC.

Senior Jake Meredith returned to the mat for the Sun Devils in the first time in over a year and did so in style, downing Antonio Giorgio at 197 pounds to give ASY a 15-13 edge.

ASU's lone other senior and returning All-American and No. 8 Levi Cooper provided the clutch performance of the night as he pinned Jake Barnhart at the 6:18 mark to give ASU an insurmountable lead heading into the final bout of the evening at 21-13.

Dalton Miller dropped a decision at 125 pounds to round out the evening, but ASU took the match thanks to Cooper's 17th career pin as the senior improved to 63-38 in his career.

ASU Wrestling Drops First Dual of the Season To Bloomsburg

It came down to the final match of the day, but ASU came just shy in a 18-16 decision.

***Please note that this is a corrected version of a recap posted earlier. The original scores that were provided to the Campbell media relations department and, in turn, sent over to the ASU media relations department were incorrect. Originally, it was reported that ASU had won this particular match when, in fact, it was the opposite. We sincerely apologize for the confusion.

Nov. 10, 2012

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Arizona State University dropped a hotly contested match to the Bloomsburg Huskies on Saturday in the first half of a double-header in Buies Creek, N.C.

Bloomsburg 18, Bloomsburg 16

Sophomore 125-pounder Dalton Miller got dropped his second consecutive of the season to the Huskies' Sean Boylan in a 4-2 decision to give Bloomsburg the 3-0 lead early.

Bloomsburg followed that with a Nick Wilcox pin over Shane McGough just 1:28 into the match to go ahead 9-0 just two bouts into the dual but Matt Kraus answered with a 13-5 major decision over Matt Rappo for his first victory as a Sun Devil to bring ASU back within 9-4.

Nathan Hoffer remained perfect on the season as he downed Josh Roosa, 5-2, and ASU inched closer in making the score 9-7

The Huskies answered in the form of No. 6 Frank Hickman, who earned a 9-4 decision over Codey Combs (9-4) at 157 pounds to pave the way for a Josh Veltre decision (9-7) over the Sun Devils' Parker Madl to give Bloomsburg the 15-7 through six matches.

ASU's upper weight classes answered the call, though, ripping off three consecutive victories at 174, 184 and 197 pounds to make things interesting heading into the heavyweight bout

Redshirt freshman Blake Stauffer continued his impressive start as a Sun Devil, shutting out Chris Smith 6-0 and that allowed Kevin Radford to put ASU back in the lead with a 10-4 decision over Andre Petroski.

Jake Meredith made things in the day's most exciting match, upsetting No. 14 Richard Perry in a high-scoring 18-12 decision to put ASU up 16-15 for its first lead of the contest

However, the biggest upset of the day came as Justin Grant was able to take the decision over No. 8 Levi Cooper in the heavyweight match, giving three points to the Huskies and sealing the deal with the 18-16 victory.
