Ugh... The IOC has decided to take away a weight class and add two for womens wrestling. The 6-6-6 plan. Wow. http://intermatwrestle.com/articles/11907

... but the way the IOC is looking at it is ... 12-6!
12 men's weight classes and 6 women's.
Are you making a POSITIVE difference in the life of kids?

http://www.nwcaonline.com/nwcawebsite/savingwrestlinghome/facts.aspxThere are 272,000 HS wrestlers and only 8,000 are female. That is a 34 male to 1 female ratio. Does the IOC really think that 6-6-6 will increase television viewership? STUPID. Males have lost 40% of their representation in the Olympics. Title IX is STUPID and so is this.

This was a strategic decision by FILA to increase the chances of a positive IOC vote on September 8. The supporters of squash and baseball/softball objected strongly to this change, indicating that they also saw this as improving wrestling's prospects (and reducing their odds of winning the IOC vote).
Will is absolutely correct that this does not come close to reflecting the actual participation rates by men vs. women in our sport, but women in sports is something that is emphasized both nationally and internationally. I don't see that changing.
I'm less concerned about adding women's spots and more concerned about the men's weights that have been lost. Granted, our first battle should be to keep wrestling in the Olympics. Once that goal is obtained, FILA needs to work on getting some of the weights that have been lost added back. There will be new leadership in the IOC after this year, so maybe this will be something we can get done in the future.

Wrestling logic doesn't work here, and I don't know if real logic will either.
We need to accept the fact that women deserve equality in all aspects of life. Hell, if I ever wrestle again I may have a female in my corner. Break down all the foolish barriers.
But some men aren't ready for a women president, some men are still pissed we have a black one. STUPID is right! I would love to see you dive into defining exactly what that means...
