Novice Events - Are there enough offered??
Basically we are talking about introduction to the sport and get some mat time with scoring, refs, etc.
We have about 35 Novice wrestlers in our club(1st and 2nd year kids this year) Of those 35 about 8-10 are ready to move on this year. We are bringing them into Open practice now and signing them up for smaller open tournaments.
We list 6 to 8 Novice tournaments available on our schedule within an hours drive each year that we send coaches to. The Novice season ends in mid February as far as tournaments go for our club. We will encourage all 2nd year wrestlers and some 1st yr. wrestlers to come to Open practices in mid February - to the end of the season. I have found that shortening the novice season intentionally for Novice kids has been positive in retaining kids the next year.
The question is - are there enough Novice tournaments in your area?
I counted approximately 25 novice events around the state this year on the "Events List".
I counted 13 Novice Tournament opportunities within at least 1.5 hours from Overland Park.

I think in the Hutchinson (Wichita) area there are plenty of Novice events.
Derby, Valley Center, Augusta, Newton, Garden Plain, Nickerson, Hutch (for the one I didn't mess up on)
These are 6 options and I think 6 tournaments for a true novice is a very good first year.
If they are one of those over the top novice kids then they need to hit a few other open tournaments.

Any more thoughts on availability of tournaments around the state?

Ark City has it's novice tournament the weekend before Derby each year. It is about an hour drive for the Wichita crowd but a good tournament and bringing the count to 7.

I believe there are quite a few opportunities for novice to wrestle, especially in D2...What I would like to see though is more of these novice tournaments combined with the open tournaments and wrestled on the same day. There are many clubs out there where it causes coaches to do to tournaments on consecutive days and really puts a strain on some.
Just my opinion.

Just my opinion. That is if their facilities allow it. The best thing Derby ever did was split into 2 days.
