How do coaches calculate what weight class your child will wrestle at weight certification?

Long story short I complained to our coaches about my son only being able to wrestle what he weighs when other boys who are taller than my son (4 to 6 inches taller) can wrestle down 2 weight classes to wrestle at my sons weight. I was basically told that my son had the opportunity "to do" (my assumption is to lie about his height) what the other boys did at certifications and he chose not to (cheat) and if I were to say anything about this again my sons position on the team may be in jeopardy. Is this how all high school wrestling works ? please help ! ! ! I am completely disillusioned at this point. what are certifications for if not to keep kids from wrestling at an un healthy weight

Height has nothing to do with certification. Alpha weight the first day of practice does.

I don't understand Alpha weight. We certified about 1 week after we started practicing. We are not in Kansas so maybe we do things differently. The boys weigh, take down height, do some sort of body fat calculation and hydration test. After all these tests they come up with a weight the child could wrestle down to.

The link below is from a thread with the information that you are looking for. This thread is from 2010, but I believe the information is still accurate.

thank you for the information.

it is disappointing to find out the rules in each state are so different. I was trying to avoid looking into this question on a forum in our home state to avoid any backlash or controversy but it looks like I may just have to to get the answer I am looking for.

thanks again for truing to help
