Kyle Mines, a member of the KWCA Hall of Fame has passed away at age 87. Kyle was a successful high school coach in Colby and St. Francis, (where he coached two Grand State champions and two Juco National Champions), as well as Sidney, NE. He also coached in Arizona and was the Head Coach at the Univerity of Arizona for a year. Kyle was state champion for Oberlin in the days of single class state tournaments. His senior year he was undefeated and UNSCORED on. He told me the NWKL Tournament in those days was a more difficult to medal than the State Tournament! He tried out for the 1948 Olympic Team as a HS Senior and placed 2nd. The "funny" part is he received unexcused absences from Oberlin High School for attending the Trials! Kyle wrestled collegiately at K-State.
I came into contact with Kyle in 1975 as he was my first Principal He was also in his first year as a Principal. We leanded on each other. I learned a lot from Kyle and he became a trusted friend and mentor in education and athletic issues. Kyle had a lot of faults like most of us mortals, but the one thing that he could NEVER be accused of was not putting students and his athletes first.
Kyle's services are Monday, May 14 at 10:00 a.m. in the Oberlin Funeral Home.
