Are any of the KS teams (like Hard Knox) planning a trip to the Mile High Tourny (March 15) or Reno (April 4)? I know there is a BIG tournament in Kansas the same weekend as Reno which may keep most of the toughest kids here. Also, is it true that the tourney in Kansas on April 4th (or so) is really the BIGGEST TOUGHEST tournament in the world. Even tougher than Tulsa Nationals.

I doubt that any Kansas teams will be going to the Mile High Tourny on March 15, since this is the week of the Kansas Subdistrict Tournaments, the first qualifying tournament in our state championship series. If they don't wrestle at their subdistrict tournament, Kansas wrestlers forfeit their chance to compete for a state championship.

I admire the quality of the Tulsa Nationals tournament too much to say that USAW Nationals is better; however, I do believe that they are very comparable. With 37 states represented, the USAW Nationals has a similar geographic reach with that of Tulsa Natls. Competitively, I have seen many Tulsa Natls medalists who have failed to place at USAW Nationals, and visa versa.

In summary, I believe both Tulsa Nationals and USAW Nationals are going to give you all the competition you would want. Also, for the first time this year, Cadets will be included at USAW Nationals. That means that wrestlers born in 1987-1988 will be able to compete at the Folkstyle Nationals, with the potential to earn Triple Crown honors if they can earn championships in both styles at Fargo, combined with a 1st place finish at Topeka.

I would have a hard time saying the biggest and toughest in the world because we haven't attended them all. We have attended TN 6X and placed 4X, we have attended the Topeka tournament 3X and never placed. For us the weight and age difference has made it tough plus a different group of kids. We hope to place this year but know it will be very difficult.

We will not be going to Reno for the reason Mike Juby stated, and we always find the USAW Nationals to be extremely competitive. This weekend in Tulsa I spoke with some people who highly recommended the Tournament of Champions in Ohio (Toledo, I think?) which is somewhere around the 22nd of April. I looked up their past placers and saw some very recognizable names in the brackets we are familiar with, but not many from KS or OK. We may try to catch that this year. Placing at the Salina, KS tournament will qualify you for the Ohio tournament, as will some others, they have a listing on their website. (See the Ohio Tournament of Champions post on this page, it will direct you to the site.) Good luck to you wherever you compete!

The website for the Ohio Tournament is http://www.ohiotofc.com and the event is scheduled for April 26, at the Columbus Convention Center, in downtown Columbus, OH.

Just a reminder that if you do plan to attend, do not wait until the last minute to register, as the event will close out and people will get turned away (as many as 1000 wrestlers have been turned away in a given year). You should make sure to register (and get your paperwork on) by mid March t be safe.
